Chicago Rallies to Defeat Emory Women's Tennis in ITA National Indoor Championship Match

The Emory University women's tennis team fell to the University of Chicago in the ITA National Indoor Championship match, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, KY.

The Eagles raced out to a 4-0 lead but a rally by the Maroons saw them claim the final five singles points to win in a match that went past the four-hour mark.

Senior Jessica Fatemi and freshman Eliza McPherron led off the scoring with their 8-2 victory on court three before the pairings of Emma Cartledge/Xuanjin Li and Christina Watson/Ana Cristina Perez notched identical 8-7 wins on the top two doubles lines to complete the sweep for the Eagles.

Junior Alexa Goetz continued the scoring as she was the first to finish in singles, recording a straight set 6-0, 6-2 win at the sixth position.

Chicago then began its comeback, knocking off McPherron, Fatemi and Perez in order and in straight sets to bring the deficit to 4-3 with two matches remaining.

Both remaining matches needed three sets to decide a winner. After winning set one, 6-2, Watson dropped the next two to Shianna Guo 6-3, 6-1 as the score was knotted up at four.

The match then came down to court three where Cartledge was taking on UC's Claudia Ng. Cartledge was the early aggressor as she claimed the first set 6-4, however Ng battled back to win the next two 6-3, 6-1 to give UC the indoors title.

Emory, now standing 3-2 overall, makes the trip out west for spring break with matches set against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer this weekend.
