Women’s Tennis Opens UAA Championships with 5-1 win over Brandeis

The Emory University women's tennis team defeated the Brandeis Judges in the first round of the 2023 UAA Championships at the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Thursday morning.

The No. 2 seeded Eagles defeated the No. 7 Judges 5-1 to earn a spot in the semifinal match on Friday at 12:30 pm where they will face sixth seeded WashU. The Bears defeated the third seeded Carnegie Mellon Tartans 5-3 on Thursday morning to earn their spot.

Emory started strong in the morning taking two doubles matches with the No. 2 doubles team senior Alexa Goetz and freshman Izzy Antanavicius leading the way with their 8-1 decision. Sophomore Eliza McPherron and freshman Iris Berman secured their win on three with an 8-4 victory.

In singles play, Berman finished first with her 6-1, 6-1 decision on court five taking the third point for the Eagles. Goetz pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 win on six followed by junior Ilayda Baykan closing out the match with her 6-0, 6-3 victory on court three.

At the conclusion of the match, senior Stephanie Shulman was halted at a 3-6, 6-0, 0-1 decision on one and freshman Emily Kantrovitz was held on court two at 5-7, 1-2. McPherron was also held at the No. 4 spot with a 7-6, 5-1 decision.
