2022-23 Women’s Tennis Season Recap

2022-23 Women’s Tennis Season Recap

Under new leadership in newly appointed head Coach, Bridget Disher, the Emory University women's tennis team had another banner year during the 2022-23 slate.

The Eagles finished the season with a 14-7 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III semifinals, the 15th consecutive season the team has at least reached the quarterfinals. Emory also finished as the runner-up at the University Athletic Association Championships at the end of April.

Three student-athletes earned ITA All-America recognition for their efforts during the season with senior Stephanie Shulman leading the way with her season in singles. In her final season at Emory, Shulman finished her illustrious career with a bang. Shulman burst onto to the scene in the fall as she pushed through the ITA scene winning the ITA South Regional title and competing in the consolation match at the ITA Cup in October. In the spring, Shulman posted a 16-13 record in singles going 9-8 in the No. 1 spot. To start the season, Shulman defeated Georgia Gwinnett with a 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 decision and continued her momentum throughout the season. She was selected to the NCAA Individual Championships in singles before having to withdraw in the Round of 32 due to injury.

Two other All-American standouts took on doubles competition this season as well as singles. Freshman Emily Kantrovitz rounded out her first singles season with a team-leading 19 wins and went 14-3 in the No. 2 spot for the Eagles. Kantrovitz competed in the Round of 16 at the ITA South Regional before starting the spring season with a win over Georgia Gwinnett in singles. She was selected to compete in both singles and doubles at the NCAA Individual Championships. Her teammate Ana Cristina Perez also competed on both ends posting a 12-5 record in singles this season. Perez advanced to the semifinals of the ITA South Regional in the fall before taking two big wins against No. 8 Tufts and No. 5 Washington and Lee in the spring.

Together, the two competed in one of the most impressive doubles seasons posting a 13-10 record going 12-9 in the No. 1 position. In March, the two pulled out an 8-5 win over then No. 2 Sewanee, a match that became part of a seven-match win streak from March 4 to March 31. The tandem won all postseason matches in the team championships before the semifinal match against Claremont-M-S. The duo was selected to the NCAA Individual Championships where they advanced to the quarterfinals against Babson.

Freshman Izzy Antanavicius and senior Alexa Goetz also became a force to be reckoned with in doubles competition holding a team-best 17-10 record in competition. The duo went 15-6 in the No. 2 spot and also went on a seven-match win streak in the month of March. In the NCAA Team Championships, the two went 3-1 in doubles competition defeating Sewanee and the soon to be national champion Claremont.

At the UAA Championship in April, the Eagles faced the University of Chicago in the finals, a championship matchup that has been happening since 2017. The Maroons bested Emory for the second season in a row, but the loss didn't stop the momentum from the Eagles as they headed into the postseason.

After the conclusion of the season, the Eagles earned numerous honors throughout the conference, region and the nation. Shulman led the way winning the regional and national award for Most Improved Senior as well as taking home All-UAA First Team honors. Kantrovitz was named UAA Rookie of the Year and earned All-UAA First Team honors while Goetz and Antanavicius also earned All-UAA Second Team honors for their doubles season. Goetz also took home CSC Academic All-America First Team recognition. Teammates Eliza McPherron and Iris Berman rounded out the All-UAA selections as they were honored with Second Team honors in doubles. Berman also earned Honorable Mention recognition in singles.

In June, the Eagles had two athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally in singles: Shulman (16) and Kantrovitz (24) with the doubles tandem of Perez/Kantrovitz checking in sixth nationally. Shulman finished third while Kantrovitz finished sixth in the regional rankings in singles. Perez joined the list at No. 18 regionally. In doubles, Perez/Kantrovitz were ranked third while Antanavicius and Goetz made an appearance at No. 9.
