Three from Women’s Tennis Selected to NCAA Individual Championships

The Emory University women's tennis team received three selections to the NCAA Individual Championships as the selections were announced Wednesday evening on NCAA.com.

Senior Ilayda Baykan will make her individual debut at the NCAA Championships while fellow senior Ana Cristina Perez sees her first career singles selection. Sophomore Emily Kantrovitz rounds out the selections earning her first singles selection. The duo of Kantrovitz and Perez were also selected as the third alternative for doubles.

Baykan has been a powerhouse for the Eagles spending time in both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in singles. She has won 11 singles matches during the spring and has won three of her last four matches with each win coming against ranked teams.

Perez has also become a big asset to the team spending most of her time in the No. 2 spot. She is currently ranked 13th in the nation and has won nine matches against ranked opponents. One of her biggest matches this season came in the UAA Championship match against Chicago where she took her match with a 6-4, 6-4 decision. For the season, she is second on the team with 18 overall singles wins.

Kantrovitz has established herself in the No. 1 singles spot and has won a total of 12 singles matches this spring. One of her biggest wins came against the No. 1 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps taking the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision. She is currently ranked No. 3 in the country and leads the Eagles with 20 victories on the year. In the fall, she defeated Perez in the singles championship of the ITA Regionals.

The NCAA Individual Championships will take place May 25-27 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Eagles will begin NCAA postseason team play this weekend in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and received a first round bye. Emory will face the winner of the NC Wesleyan-Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday, May 11 at 10 am.
