Emory women’s tennis head coach Bridget Disher has announced that former Eagle and teammate Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico has been appointed as part-time assistant coach for the 2023-24 season.

Gonzalez-Rico showed an illustrious playing career from 2017-21 where she finished with an 81-17 record in singles (ninth overall in Emory history) and a 76-23 record in doubles; 45-9 in the No. 1 spot. Her 34 singles and doubles wins in the 2018-19 season are tied for the most in a single season from an Eagle. She capped off her career with an NCAA Division III Doubles National Championship and earned ITA National Senior Player of the Year honors. In 2017-18, she, along with Disher, established a school seasonal mark with 34 doubles wins en route to advancing to the semifinal round at the NCAA DIII Championships. She also played a major role in the team’s eighth national championship in 2021, earning one of the clinching points on court one with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The former Eagle earned a number of awards and recognitions in her career including ITA All-America and All-UAA honors in each of her four seasons, ITA Division III National and UAA Rookie of the Year and UAA Player of the Year during the 2018-19 season. She also took home individual National Championships in singles (2018-19) and doubles (2020-21) and became a finalist in the Honda Division III Women’s Athlete of the Year Award in 2019.

Following her career at Emory, Gonzalez-Rico completed her fifth season as a graduate student at the University of California, Irvine while obtaining a Master of Science in Business Analytics. She finished the season with a 20-11 overall record in singles, 12-7 in the No. 1 spot and finished with a 16-8 record in doubles, leading the team with both singles and doubles wins. For her efforts, she took home All-Big West First Team honors in singles and Honorable Mention in doubles while also earning ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
