Euwer Breaks Emory Shot Put Record at Tiger Indoor Invitational

Emory University senior Ben Euwer broke the program record in the shot put while competing at the Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee on Saturday, highlighting a number of strong performances by Eagles at the meet.

Euwer won the shot put at the meet with a throw of 14.49 meters, besting the previous school record of 14.41 meters, set by Josh Heiber in 2004.  The mark was the best by a University Athletic Association (UAA) competitor this season.  Euwer also won the weight throw with a toss of 12.91 meters.

Senior Xavier Fowler added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.77 meters, the second-best in the UAA this season, while sophomore Somon Nader's won the pole vault by clearing the bar at 3.95 meters, the seventh-best in the UAA this year.  Junior Pat Lanter's sixth-place finish with a leap of 6.20 meters in the long jump was the sixth-best in the UAA, while freshman Ankush Mohile claimed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.37 seconds, sixth among all conference competitors in 2012.

Other top mar for the Emory men came from sophomore Jide Lawal in the 55-meter dash (16th place, 6.88 seconds), Lanter in the 200-meter dash (15th-place, 24.33 seconds), and the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team of junior Jay Okeke, freshman Evan Rhea, junior Taylor Warren and sophomore Mike Moserowitz (eighth-place, 3:45.60).

For the women, freshman Emily Mitchell turned in a strong day, winning the long jump with a distance of 5.26 meters, the second-best in the UAA in 2012 and 41st among all Division III competitors this season.  She also finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.27 meters.

Emory had a pair of strong relay performances at the meet as well.  The Eagles' distance medley relay team of sophomore Lucie Pyle, freshman Serena Saari, freshman Alyssa Doolan and freshman Marissa Gogniat won the event with a time of 13:19.73.  Emory's 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Shaunesse Jacobs, freshman Katie Pohl, freshman Ulrica Tull and freshman Danielle Pelletier finished sixth with a time of 4:31.99.

Freshman Elaina Kim won the pole vault with a mark of 3.05 meters, fourth-best in the UAA this season.  Other top performers for the women included freshman Debora Adjibaba in the 55-meter dash (seventh-place, 7.49 seconds), Jacobs in the 200-meter dash (ninth-place, 29.18 seconds), sophomore Ijeoma Okafor in the 400-meter dash (fifth-place, 1:05.40), Gogniat in the 800-meter dash (fourth-place, 2:27.71), senior Jasmine McCullough in the 55-meter hurdles (second-place, 8.61 seconds), junior Theresa Ford in the high jump (second-place, 1.57 meters), and freshman Taylor Williams in the shot put (14th-place, 7.85 meters).

Emory will be back in action at two meets next weekend, competing at the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson University on Friday, and the Vulcan Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday and Saturday.
