Emory Women’s Track & Field Wins Third-Straight UAA Championship; Men Finish Fifth

The Emory University women's track and field team turned in a dominant final day at the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships to claim its third-consecutive outdoor conference title.  Meanwhile, the Emory men finished fifth at the UAA Championships.

The Emory women finished with 226.5 points, coming from behind in the second day to defeated second-place Washington University (201.5 points) and third-place Case Western Reserve University (157 points).  It marked the seventh Outdoor UAA Championship in the program's history.

Emory athletes recorded three conference records during the second day.  Emory's 4x100-meter relay team of Jasmine McCullough, Alix Dyer, Lauren Attiah and Debora Adjibaba claimed the UAA championship in the event with a record time of 47.17 seconds, the third-fastest mark in school history.  The 4x400-meter relay team of Adjibaba, Attiah, Kaele Leonard and Alix Dyer also won the event with a UAA record mark of 3:53.57.  Adjibaba, a freshman, set a conference record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.17 seconds to win the event.

Adjibaba added an individual conference championship in 200-meter dash with a time of 25.44 seconds, while Dyer won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.67 seconds.  Attiah added the final conference title of the day for the Emory women, winning the triple jump with a leap of 11.85 meters.

Stephanie Crane claimed all-UAA honors in the 1,500-meter run with a third-place finish in the event, while Theresa Ford did the same with a second-place finish in the discus throw.  Other all-UAA honors earned by Eagles during day two included second-place finishes from Leonard in the 400-meter dash, McCullough in the 100-meter dash, Dyer in the 200-meter dash, and third-place finishes from Morgan Monroe in the 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash, Leonard in the 200-meter dash, Charlotte Diggs in the 400-meter hurdles, and Ford in the high jump.

All together, Emory's women amassed six conference championships and 20 all-UAA honors during the two-day meet.

The men finished the meet with 111 points, ending competition behind Washington University (195.5), Carnegie Mellon (149.5), Case (118), and Chicago (113).

Ian Francis claimed his second and third titles of the meet, winning the triple jump with a mark of 14.82 meters (.01 meters short of the conference record) and teaming with Jay Okeke, Pat Lanter, and Gui Silva on the UAA Champions 4x100-meter relay team, which won the event with a time of 42.82 seconds.

Adding all-UAA performances during the second day were James Bassen in the javelin throw (second place, 52.67 meters), Stephen Ellwood in the 1,500-meter run (second place, 3:57.97), Silva in the 400-meter dash (second place, 49.23 seconds), Patrick Crews in the 800-meter run (third place, 1:58.81), Xavier Fowler in the triple jump (second place, 13.99 meters) and the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team of Chambers, Francis, Courtlandt Perkins and Silva (second place, 3:20.68).

Emory's men accumulated three UAA Championships and nine all-UAA honors during the meet.

The Eagles will return to action next weekend at the Bob Pollock Spring Invitational at Clemson University.
