Ford & Lorch Lead Eagles with Titles During Day 1 of UAAs

The Emory University Women's Track and Field team completed a strong first day of competition at the 2013 University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships, including a pair of conference titles, three all-UAA finishes, nine scoring performance and 15 times that qualified for Sunday's finals.

The Eagles ended the first day of competition at Icahn Stadium in New York, NY in third place with 48 points.  Chicago finished the first day with the lead in the standings, scoring 72 points, while Washington University (Mo.) is in second with 68 points.  Following Emory were Case Western Reserve (43.5), NYU (20.5), Carnegie Mellon (15) and Brandeis (five).

Two Emory women won UAA Championships during the first day of competition.  Senior Theresa Ford won the long jump with conference-record leap of 5.73 meters, also good for the ninth-best mark in Division III this season and the second-best mark in school history.  Ford also scored with a sixth-place finish in the shot put (10.55 meters), and qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a third-place finish in the preliminaries (15.55 seconds). 

Emory's other UAA Championship on day one came from junior Meredith Lorch, who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 11:15.63.  It was Lorch's first-career individual UAA Championship.

The Emory women received an all-UAA performance from its 4x800-meter relay team, which finished second in a time of 9:21.26, the third-best time in school history.

Other scorers on day one for the Emory women included sophomore Hannah Moriarty with a sixth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run (39:14.62), freshman Janay Harris with a seventh-place finish in the shot put (10.47 meters), sophomore Elaina Kim with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (3.34 meters), sophomore Hannah Smith with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:21.84) and sophomore Anja Matthes with a sixth-place finish in the long jump (4.98 meters).

Emory also had 15 qualifiers for finals in events on Sunday, including four preliminary event winners.  Sophomore Debora Adjibaba won the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash, setting a UAA record with a time of 24.97 seconds in the event.  She also won the preliminaries of 100-meter dash with a time of 12.31 seconds.

Senior Kaele Leonard added a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 57.20 seconds and also finished third in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.78 seconds.  Junior Morgan Monroe won the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 15.22 seconds, and added a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash preliminaries (12.92 seconds).  Other finals qualifiers for the Emory women include sophomore Electra Korn in both the 400-meter dash (second place, 58.25 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (second place, 1:05.33), sophomore Hannah Parrra in both the 100-meter hurdles (fourth place, 16.55 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (eighth place, 1:07.56), sophomore Stephanie Crane (second place, 2:16.21), freshman Julie Williamson (fifth place, 2:17.40) and junior Emily Caesar (seventh place, 2:21.92) in the 800-meter run, and junior Pollara Cobb in the 100-meter dash (sixth place, 13.00 seconds).

Action at the final day of the UAA Championships will resume at 9:00 AM on Sunday morning.
