Leonard & Ford End Careers with UAA AOW Honors

Emory University seniors Kaele Leonard and Theresa Ford were named the final University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the 2012-13 track and field season, after their performances during the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin last weekend.

Leonard earned an all-America honor in the 400-meter dash, finishing seventh in the event with a time of 55.85 seconds in the finals.  Her time broke her own school record, set during the preliminaries of the meet, and marked a .49 second improvement on the school-record time and .73 second improvement on her personal-best time entering the meet.  Leonard also ran the anchor leg of the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team, which finished 13th with a time of 3:51.58, and the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay team, which finished 16th in a time of 48.45 seconds.  This was her sixth UAA Athlete of the Week selection of the year, and the ninth of her career, including a pair earned for her efforts with the women's soccer team.

Ford was the national runner-up in the heptathlon, accumulating a school-record 4,828 points during the two day event.  She led all competitors through the first six events of the heptathlon, building her lead with a first-place finish in the high jump with a school-record height of 1.72 meters, and career-best marks of 14.94 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 26.11 seconds in the 200-meter dash, and 2:46.40 in the 800-meter run.  Also in the heptathlon, Ford recorded marks of 5.49 meters in the long jump, 35.91 meters in the javelin throw, and 9.90 meters in the shot put.  She added an all-America honor in the individual high jump, finishing fourth by clearing the bar at a height of 1.70 meters.  It was Ford's fifth Athlete of the Week honor of both the season and her career.

Ford contributed 13 points to the Eagles' total, while Leonard scored two, helping the Eagles to a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the second-best finish in the program's history.
