Emory Indoor Track & Field Teams to Participate in Vulcan Invitational Saturday

The Emory University indoor track and field program will kick off the spring portion of the schedule this Saturday (Jan. 11th) at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Eagles are sending both the men's and women's teams to the Vulcan Invitational, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST. The meet will be hosted by the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Emory and the Mississippi University for Women are the only D-III programs that will compete. A total of 18 men's teams will be in attendance, while 19 female teams will make the trip. Out of those 18 male teams, nine are D-I competitors and four are D-II. On the other side, nine of the women's teams in attendance are D-I and five are D-II. The only team to enter the meet ranked by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association is the women's squad from North Greenville, which landed in the No.-25 spot in the D-II preseason poll. Only the D-I and D-II levels have released polls at this point of the season.

The Eagles are competing for the first in over a month, when they participated in the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker on December 6th to open the indoor season, which was also held at the Birmingham Crossplex. At that event, senior Greta Wilker broke her own Emory school-record in the women's indoor shotput with an effort of 12.47m, while her male counterpart, freshman Wheeler Wilson launched his first attempt 15.04m to set a shotput record of his own. The pair of throwers are not scheduled to appear in this weekend's Vulcan Invitational, according to Head Coach Linh Nguyen. The first-year head coach is prioritizing the health of his athletes following the winter break layoff and wants to make sure that they will be ready for the Emory Invitational, which is scheduled for next Sunday.

The faction of Eagles that do make the familiar trek to the Birmingham Crossplex will see the competition start with the 5000m run, which is slated to start at 10:15 a.m. EST. The meet will close with the 4x400m Relay at approximately 6:15 p.m. EST. Results of each event will be updated as they happen and can be followed here.
