Women Finish First, Men Second at Spring Break Classic

The Emory University women's track & field team recorded their first team win of the season at the Emory Spring Break Classic while the men finished in second.

The women's team recorded 161.33 points to win their first meet of the 2022 season by over 60 points. West Georgia (98.50 points) and Hope (93.50 points) rounded out the women's podium. The men finished in second place with 94 points trailing behind only Berry who sat atop the leaderboard with 110.50 points. Truett-McConell (63 points) took home bronze at the meet.

On the field for the women, freshman Sarah Fineman had a standout day recording a distance of 12.51m in the shot put event which marks the seventh best distance in program history. Freshman Alexandra Feurer showed out in her first collegiate outdoor meet recording a height of 3.15m in the pole vault event which was good for a tie for second place. Junior Hope Jackson registered a distance of 38.34m in the discus throw good for fourth place.

On the track, the 4x800 relay team of sophomore Lily Taylor, freshman Jenna Daly, junior Lauren Anshen and junior Shana Fitzmaurice finished in first place with a time of 9:46.18. Finishing just behind the first place team was another Emory relay team that consisted of sophomore Elle Haushalter, sophomore Savannah Haushalter, senior Bella Racette and sophomore Lucy Hansen and finished in second recording a time of 10:00.40. Freshman Liesel Scherrer (10:44.50) and freshman Julia Danko (10:46.30) finished back-to-back in the 3,000m run to earn first and second place finishes, respectively.

Elsewhere on the track, junior Claire Evans was one of three Eagles to qualify for the 100m hurdle final and Evans third place finish and time of 15.49 seconds marked the best on the team. Senior Lauren Cunild came through with a time of 2:22.44 and a second place finish in the 800m run to earn eight points for the Eagles. Sophomore Libby Ranocha had a rock solid day posting a third place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.38. The 4x400 relay team of freshman Kaya Binetti, Ranocha, freshman Mina Leopold, and Evans registered a time of 4:04.54 good for second place.

Sophomore Tristan Olpin showed out in the first outdoor meet of the year in the 3000m run crossing the finish line in a time of 8:45.17 for a first place finish at the meet as well as the seventh-fastest time in program history. Emory had the top three finishers in the 4x800 relay with the relay team of senior Jacob Hedgepeth, senior Jon Marcus, junior Justin Pecore and Andrew Pahnke taking gold with a time of 7:55.73. The 4x400 relay team consisting of freshman Tristan Moore, freshman Chris Belz, junior Thomas Davis, and sophomore Dawit Dean finished in third place with a time of 3:22.69.

On the field for the men, graduate student Maxwell Prizant had a standout performance finishing in first place in the pole vault event registering a height of 4.30m. Sophomore Kenya Sei recorded an eighth place finish in the discus throw with a distance of 38.25m to earn an additional point for the Eagles.

The Eagles return to action next weekend for their second consecutive home meet, the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open, with the first event set to begin the morning of Friday, March 25th.
