Track & Field Off to Strong Start at Berry Field Day Invitational

In a final tune-up prior to next week's UAA Championships, the Emory University track & field teams ventured north on I-75 for the first day of the Berry College Field Day Invitational in Rome.

For the men, junior Scott Masterson turned in a season best time to lead six Eagles in scoring position in the 1500m Run. Masterson dropped a 3:51.75, a season best for any Eagle and the third fastest time in program history, to win the event. Sophomore Jack Petkash went 3:51.96, the fourth-ever time under 3:52, to finish second with classmate Marcus Cheema taking fourth at 3:52.77.

Over in the 5000m Run, sophomore Justin Whitney made his season debut in 5000m Run and posted a time of 15:45.74 to lead the Eagles in the event. Sophomore Will Gossett recorded a 59.45 to place sixth in the 400m Hurdles while freshman Jason Huang had a season-best 1:01.40 to finish 10th. In the field events, sophomore Jalen Nixon registered a throw of 41.96m whereas junior Thomas Powell had a season best mark of 37.48m. Also turning in a season best mark was junior Logan Chen in the triple jump at 11.94m as he finished in fifth.

For the women's squad, the Eagles were paced by notable season best performances starting with sophomore Dana Catalano in the javelin. She notched a throw of 37.57 to finish second in the event. In the 400m Hurdles, junior Clementine Bodus had the fastest team mark of the season to date with her 1:05.95m, also placing second, and in the 1500m Run, freshman Katherine Kennedy and junior Lucy Hansen both went sub-5:00 with Kennedy taking fourth at 4:56.35 and Hansen in sixth at 4:57.45.

The Berry Field Day Invitational will conclude on Saturday with events starting at 9:00 AM.
