The 2022-23 indoor season marked a monumental milestone in the history of the Emory University women's track & field program as the season culminated with the first-ever indoor individual national championship in Emory track & field history.
Senior Annika Urban, coming off a historic cross country season where she smashed program records and was a six-time race winner and All-American, continued to add to her legacy with a landmark indoor season. A campaign that featured countless race wins and several program records being set all led up to the NCAA Championships in mid-March in Birmingham, Alabama where she cemented herself in the Emory and Division III history books.
Competing in the mile, Urban showcased one of the great races in DIII history as she broke the NCAA championship record to win going away at 4:43.17. With the win she became the first student-athlete, male or female, to win an indoor national title in team history. After winning the indoor mile crown, she was finished on the track as she earned a bronze medal finish in the 3000m to become the first Eagle to earn multiple All-America honors in a single meet in four years.
Urban was joined on the national spotlight by teammates Libby Ranocha and Dashiel Tao Harris who qualified for the 800m and 400m events. Ranocha placed 11th in the 800m while Tao Harris was 17th in the 400m. The Eagles would finish with 16 points at the meet to end in a tie for 12th – the third-highest finish ever for an Emory women's team and the best since 2018 team finished eighth.
Urban led a contingent of 17 Eagles with USTFCCCA All-Region accolades, earning All-Region acclaim in four events and was tabbed as the South's Track Athlete of the Year. NCAA-bound Ranocha garnered three honors while Audrey Johnson also gained three awards. Furthermore, Head Coach Linh Nguyen took home Coach of the Year annals for the south region.
At the UAA Championships in late February, the Eagles captured conference championships in four events and tallied seven All-UAA efforts to finish third for the seventh time out of the last eight conference meets.
Urban was a two-time event champion, winning gold in the mile and 5000m, and was later selected as the UAA Most Outstanding Performer in the running events. To go with her two event titles, Urban joined Johnson, Ranocha and Tao Harris for a third place finish the 4x400m. Adding UAA titles in Waltham, Mass. was Johnson in the 60m and Nyjah Willis in the weight throw. Ranocha tacked on a runner-up run in the 800m whereas Tao Harris took bronze in the 400m.
Urban continued to rack up accolades following the outdoor season as she was one of four Eagles named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District and was the lone member from the women's roster to earn Academic All-America honors, garnering a spot on the First Team. Joining Urban as Academic All-District selections were Johnson, Ranocha and Tao Harris.
