Coming off a historic indoor season, the Emory University women's track & field team picked up right where it had left off and added more hardware to its collection by season's end.
Senior Annika Urban, who had already excelled during the cross country and indoor track seasons, continued to add to her growing resume with another outstanding outdoor campaign to close out her Emory career.
She led a group of six student-athletes to the NCAA Championships at St. John Fisher in Rochester, New York at the end of May. At nationals, the Eagles saw three All-America performances across three events and finished the three-day meet with 18 points to end in 11th place – the four-highest finish in team history and the best finish at nationals since the 2018 and 2019 teams placed fifth and seventh in back-to-back years.
After making history at the NCAA Indoor Championships by becoming Emory's first-ever indoor national champion, Urban was back at it as she further entrenched herself in DIII lore. She displayed her speed all year in the 1500m, with her fastest time of 4:19.43 representing the seventh fastest in DIII history, and at the NCAA Championships it was no difference as she easily completed the indoor mile and outdoor 1500m national championship sweep to become only the second Eagle in school history to win multiple individual national championships.
Urban's win in the 1500m was one of three All-America finishes for the team up in Rochester with Urban adding a fifth place in the 5000m while the group of Clementine Bodus, Kaya Binetti, Audrey Johnson and Dashiel Tao Harris took fifth in the 4x100m relay.
The showcase at nationals was the end of another very strong outdoor season for the women's program as 11 different athletes combined for 24 All-Region honors. Urban and Johnson paced the team with four region honors apiece while Tao Harris, Bodus and Libby Ranocha were three-time region honorees. As was the case in indoors, Urban collected South Region Track Athlete of the Year kudos while Derek Nelson was honored as the regional's Assistant Coach of the Year for his work with the sprint athletes.
To go along with the regional accolades, the Eagles had another strong performance at the UAA Championships in April at UChicago totaling one event championship and nine All-UAA finishes to lead the team to a third place finish with 135.5 points.
A precursor to the NCAA Championships, Urban claimed the team's lone event title with a win in the 1500m – one of three All-UAA performances to help her land Most Outstanding Performer once more.
Urban added a runner-up finish in the 800m, one of four second place finishes for the Eagles at the meet joining Binetti, Bodus, Johnson and Tao Harris in the 4x100m, Bodus in the 400m hurdles, Tao Harris in the 400m and the 4x400m relay group of Johnson, Ranocha, Tao Harris and Urban.
Ranocha, Dana Catalano and Caroline Hansen rounded out the top All-UAA performers with third place finishes in their respective events with Ranocha in the 800m, Catalano in the javelin and Hansen in the triple jump.
In late spring, four Eagles were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team with Urban earning a spot on the Academic All-America team with First Team acclaim. Along with Urban, Johnson, Ranocha and Tao Harris were Academic All-District selections.
