2005 Athletes Of The Week

(Nov. 14) - Sophomore Janet Bunning helped led the top-ranked Emory volleyball team to the "Elite Eight" for the third consecutive year.  During the Eagles' two matches in South Regional play she tallied 23 kills, eight service aces, five digs, six block assists and two block solos.  Against Southwestern University (Texas) in the semifinals she finished with 12 kills on a hitting percentage of .556.  She also led the team in service aces with seven.  On defense she finished with four digs and three block assists.  In the championship match against Austin College (Texas) Bunning tallied 11 kills on a .269 hitting percentage, while also having one service ace.  On defense she led the team in blocks with 3 block assists and two solo blocks, as well as finishing with one dig.  Emory now will face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the NCAA tournament.


(Nov. 7) - Senior setter Catherine Zidow led the Emory volleyball team to the program's first-ever UAA championship this past weekend. For the tournament Zidow finished with 171 assists, 23 kills, five service aces, 49 digs, nine block assists and 2 solo blocks. Her highs for the tournament came with a season-high of 52 assists against fourth-ranked New York University, seven kills against NYU, 19 digs against Rochester, four block assists against NYU and one solo block against Rochester and NYU. In the championship match against No. 1 Washington, Zidow finished with six kills, 43 assists, one service ace, 12 digs and one block assist. Zidow leads the team in assists on the season with 693.

(Nov. 7) - Senior outside hitter Katrina Damasco helped lead the Eagles to victory in the UAA volleyball championship. For the tournament she finished with 43 kills, five service aces, 21 digs, and 10 block assists. Damasco's tournament highs came with two service aces against both Rochester and Carnegie Mellon, six digs against both Rochester and fourth-ranked New York University, and five block assists against NYU. In the championship match against first-ranked Washington University, she had a tournament-high 12 kills along with five digs and two block assists defensively. Damasco leads the Eagles in service aces this season with 48.

(Nov. 7) - Junior outside hitter Courtney Rose helped guide the Emory volleyball team to its first-ever UAA championship. For the tournament she finished with 42 kills, eight service aces, 42 digs, four solo blocks, and seven block assists. Rose's tournament highs came with five service aces and 12 digs against Rochester and three block assists against Carnegie Mellon. In the championship match against No. 1 Washington University, she recorded a tournament-high 14 kills along with 11 digs, 1 solo block, and 1 block assist. Rose leads the team this season in kills with 318.


(Oct. 24) - Sophomore Janet Bunning led the third-ranked Emory volleyball team to four wins over the weekend as part of the Emory National Invitational. Over the weekend she tallied 30 kills, nine digs and 10 blocks (none assist and one solo). For her play she was voted the Invitational's most valuable player. She reached double figures on kills in three of the matches with 11 against Tufts University and 10 against Millikin University. She recorded nine kills against Webster University, while also having five block assists. Bunning for the year is fourth on the team with 156 kills and a hitting percentage of .358. She is third on the team in blocking with 67 blocks (53 assist, 14 solo).


(Oct.17) - Freshman Dani Huffman turned in a solid performance in the second UAA round robin event of 2005. Huffman competed in three of the four matches, recording eight kills and four block assists. For the season Huffman has 90 kills and 23 blocks (15 assist and eight solo).


(Oct.10) - Sophomore middle hitter Janet Bunning put together a solid effort in Emory's lone match of the week on Thursday against Berry College.  Bunning recorded 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .474.  Defensively she had three digs and four block assists.  For the year she is fifth on the team in kills with 89 and third on the team in blocks with 37 (31 assist, 6 solo).


(Oct. 3) - Senior setter Catherine Zidow turned in a solid performance for the third-ranked Emory Eagles during the first UAA round robin event of 2005. Zidow competed in two matches, recording 40 assists, seven kills, six digs, five service aces and five blocks. Against Chicago she led the team with 18 assists, while also tallying five kills and three service aces. Defensively she had one dig and three block assists. In her second match against Rochester she once against led the team with 22 assists. She also recorded two kills and two service aces. On defense she had five digs, one solo block and one block assist. Last season Zidow was honored as a third-team All-America and honorable mention all-conference.


(Sept. 26) - Junior outside hitter Courtney Rose helped lead the Emory women's volleyball team to the Emory Invitational championship over the weekend. The team went 4-0 without dropping a game. Rose competed in two matches combining for 23 kills, 23 digs, four service aces and 2 block assists. In her first game against regional foe Washington & Lee she finished the game with 15 kills, 11 digs and two service aces. She also had a hitting percentage of .519. In the second match against Spring Hill she had eight kills, 12 digs, two service aces and two block assists. Rose was named to the all-tournament team while helping the Eagles improve to 13-1 on the season and a No. 4 national ranking. Last season as a sophomore she was a second-team All-America and first team all-UAA performer.


(Sept. 19) - Junior Kristin Anderson was named most valuable player this past weekend at the Emory Volleyball Classic. Anderson helped lead the fourth-ranked Eagles to four victories, all resulting in 3-0 decisions. For the tournament she totaled 39 kills, 17 service aces, six solo blocks and 18 block assists. In Emory's first match against Huntingdon College she recorded eight kills, three service aces and 10 block assists. The final match of the evening against Southwestern University had her with 10 kills, three service aces, three blocks and five block assists. On the final day of the tournament in the semifinals against Maryville College she led the team with 10 kills, six service aces, three solo blocks and two block assists. The championship match against Southwestern had her finishing with nine kills, five service aces and one block assist.


(Sept. 12) - Senior Katrina Damasco has continued her stellar play for the season after leading the fifth-ranked Emory volleyball team to the Washington & Lee Invitational championship. For the tournament she was voted the most valuable player. Her totals for the weekend included 38 kills, 37 digs and 13 service aces as Emory did not drop a game for the weekend. The first match against Centre College had Damasco recording 12 kills, 13 digs and four aces. The second match of the evening against Averett University she finished with seven kills, nine digs and five aces while only competing in two of the games. Duing the second day of the tournament in the semifinal match against host Washington & Lee she finished with 10 kills, six digs and four service aces. The championship match with Christopher Newport had Damasco concluding the tournament with nine kills and digs each. Last season Damasco was an honorable mention all conference performer, while helping the Eagles to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.


(Sept. 6) - Senior Katrina Damasco led the Emory University volleyball team in hits during its two matches at the University of West Georgia. Damasco, an honorable mention all-UAA performer from a year ago, totaled 49 kills for the two matches. In the first match against NAIA's Lee University, ranked 12th in the country, Damasco recorded 30 kills, while hitting an amazing .370. In the second match against Division II West Georgia she again led the team in kills with 19.
