EMORY TO WELCOME SEVEN FRESHMEN FOR 2006
The Emory University volleyball program is set to bring in seven freshmen for the upcoming 2006 season.  The incoming class comes from three different areas of the country and will look to make an immediate impact for the defending UAA champions.     

The student-athletes are Hillary Buren of Kansas City, Mo., Hallie Freeborg of Kirkwood, Mo., Lexi Hill of San Jose, Calif., Alysse Meyer of Stockton, Calif., Rachel Mills of Elizabethtown, Ky., Vista Murphy of Laguna Beach, Calif. and Kaitlin Westfall of St. Louis, Mo.

Head coach Jenny McDowell is very excited about the addition of these young women and feels they will be able to help continue the success of Emory volleyball.

"We are very excited about this class of student athletes," McDowell said.  "Not only are they outstanding student-athletes but they are incredible people!  We know that the future of our program is in good hands with this special group."

Hillary Buren was a four-year starter at Notre Dame de Sion High School where she earned numerous accolades including all-district and all-state, as well as a Prep-Volleyball All America as a middle hitter.  She led her high school team in both aces and kills her senior season.  Buren plays club for the MAVS. 

Buren also excelled on the basketball court where she was a captain and four-year starter.  When volleyball season ends she will put her skills to use as a member of the Emory women's basketball team.  She also excelled in academics and is a member of the National Honors Society.

Hallie Freeborg comes to the Eagles from Kirkwood High School.  The outside hitter served as team captain her senior season, while also earning the honor as her team's most valuable player.  She led the team with 138 kills on a 2.09 average per game.  Freeborg played club for St. Louis CYC.  She is a member of the National Honors Society and the Kirkwood Youth Service.

Lexi Hill is an outside hitter who competed for Presentation High School.  In 2004 she was voted all-league honorable mention.  She played club for Vision Volleyball Club.  Away from the volleyball court she is also a stand-out competitor for track and field in the shot put and discus.  Hill was named the team's most valuable field performer.

Alysse Meyer comes to Emory from Lincoln High School and Club Pacific where she was an outside hitter.  She has been a four-year starter for Lincoln and this past season was honored as all-league most valuable player, as well as all-area mvp and team mvp. 

Meyer also excels in the classroom, as she was named the Female Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year at her high school and is a member of the honor roll.  Since 2003-04 she has been a First Team All-Academic honoree and a member of the California Scholarship Federation from 2002-present.  Meyer was recently presented with the Keri Brenneise Scholarship for a student-athlete who has made numerous accomplishments both in the classroom and athletic competition.

Rachel Mills brings a solid reputation as an outside hitter at Elizabethtown High School to Emory.  Over the last two seasons, Mills has received numerous accolades such as claiming all-state honors in 2004 and 2005. She has also been named all-district from 2002-2005.  She was also an all-region selection from 2003-05. As a senior she was named Area Player of the Year by the coaches. 

She plays club for KIVA (Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy).  Mills is also active outside of athletic competition, as she is a member of Teenage Republicans and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Vista Murphy comes to Emory from Sage Hill High School.  She is a four-year varsity performer and first team All-Academy League in 2004 and 2005, while earning second team honors in 2003.  She was also honored by CIF Division IV in 2004 as a second-team member. 

Murphy displayed strong leadership skills at Sage Hill, as she served as a team captain in 2004 and 2005.  While competing as an outside hitter for Sage Hill, she also played club for TCA (Team Complete Athlete).  She has been a member of the high school honor roll from 2003 to present.

Kaitlin Westfall is a 6'2" middle hitter who comes to Emory from Visitation Academy.  Westfall, who served as team captain, was voted second team all-state this past season, as well as first team all-region, all-district and all-conference.  In 2004 she was named second team all-district. 

At the Nike Colorado Crossroads Classic she was named to the all tournament team, while playing club for the Kirkwood Volleyball Club.  She has been a member of her school's honor roll all four years.

These freshmen join a squad that finished the 2005 season as one of the top teams in the country with a record of 32-6 and a final national ranking of fourth.  The Eagles won the UAA Championships for the first time in program history, while also being ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time ever.  

Emory opens the 2006 season Saturday, Sept. 2 at home with matches against Lee University (Tenn.) at 11:00 a.m. and Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.) at 4:00 p.m.

2005 EMORY VOLLEYBALL SEASON IN REVIEW
The 2005 Emory women's volleyball team turned in a stellar season, going down as one of the most successful in program history.

Emory finished the season with a record of 32-6 and an 11-1 University Athletic Association mark.  The 2005 season also brought about the program's first conference championship with a 3-0 sweep of then-No.1 ranked Washington University in the championship match.

The 32 wins marks the ninth 30-win season in the past 12 years, while the team reached the NCAA tournament for the 10th consecutive year.   

During the season the Eagles put together a string of 19 consecutive victories that included winning 57 straight games.  Emory finished the year 7-3 against teams ranked in the AVCA Coaches Top 25.  The team defeated Southwestern University three times, New York University twice and Washington University and Austin College. 

The regular season also brought about four tournament championships at the Washington & Lee Invitational, the Emory Classic, Emory Invitational and Emory National Inivtational.

Individual awards were spread throughout the team this year.  Junior outside hitter Courtney Rose received the highest honor, being named the AVCA National Player of the Year.  This marked the first time an Emory volleyball player has received such a prestigious honor.  Rose was also named first team All-America, as well as UAA Player of the Year, first team All-UAA and all south region. 

Seniors Catherine Zidow and Katrina Damasco also received honors.  Zidow was named a second-team All-America, while also receiving first team all-conference honors and south region honors.  Damasco was named third-team All-America and first team all-conference and south region.  Sophomore Janet Bunning received honorable mention All-America honors as well.

Freshman Maggie Baird made a big impact this season as she was named the south region and UAA freshman of the year, while also receiving honorable mention all-conference.  Joining Baird on for honorable mention all-conference was junior Kristin Anderson and sophomores Bunning and Kelly McIntosh.  

 With Rose, Zidow and Damasco being named All-Americas it ties the Emory record set during the 2004 season.  This was the seventh straight year an Emory player has been selected as an All-America. 

The senior duo of Zidow and Damasco ended their careers with a four-year record of 128-39 (.766) and a conference mark of 39-9 (.813).  During their four years Emory appeared in three national quarterfinals and one final four.

With such a successful season, several players wrote their names into the Emory record books.  McIntosh became the all-time leader in digs per game for a season with 3.92.  Damasco stands third at 3.32 and Rose fourth with 3.19.  Sophomore Ann Nicoletti moved to second in service aces per game for a season with 1.07.  Anderson stands third on the season list for blocks per game with 1.31.

For career records, Damasco now stands second in kills per game with 3.22, while Rose is fifth at 3.00.  Damasco is sixth in kills with 1,052, while Rose is 11th with 892.  Rose also moved into the top five in fifth for kill percentage at .309.  Zidow ended her career in fourth for assists with 1,879, while also standing fourth in assists per game at 7.61.  Rose and McIntosh both can be found in the top five for digs per game with Rose in second at 2.78 and McIntosh fifth at 2.52.

Head coach Jenny McDowell reached her 300th career win this season and now holds a record of 310-85 (.785).  For the second straight year she was named the South Region coach of the year, while her and her staff was named the coaching staff of the year by the UAA.

EMORY FALLS TO WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER IN NATIONAL QUARTERFINALS
The Emory volleyball team fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater by a score of 3-1 Thursday in the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals. The Warhawks downed the Eagles by scores of 27-30, 30-22, 28-30, 25-30. Emory concludes the season with a record of 32-6.

Leading the way for the Eagles was sophomore middle hitter Janet Bunning. Bunning finished the contest with 15 kills on a hitting percentage of .300. She also tallied two service aces. Junior outside hitter and national player of the year Courtney Rose finished with 11 kills, while also contributing with six service aces to lead the team.

Fellow outside hitter, senior Katrina Damasco, also finished in double figures in kills with 10. Senior setter Catherine Zidow finished with 47 assists and six kills.

The freshman duo of Maggie Baird and Dani Huffman helped the offense by contributing nine and seven kills a piece.

Defensively for the Eagles, Rose led the way with 16 digs, while sophomore libero Kelly McIntosh had 13 and Damasco 11. Bunning finished with three blocks (one solo, two assist) to lead the team.

Cassie Uttech and Kim Fruit led the way for Whitewater with 15 kills a piece. Abbie Mueller finished with 58 assists. Defensively, Uttech and Fruit each had 18 digs, while Rebekah Nelson and Carley Polk each had six blocks.

Emory's season saw them claim the South Region championship for the third consecutive year, while also claim the program's first-ever UAA conference championship with a 3-0 victory over rival Washington University (Mo.).

This marked the final game for seniors Katrina Damasco and Catherine Zidow who finished their careers with a four-year record of 128-39, three south region championships and one birth in the national semifinals. Zidow ended her career as a two-time All-America (third team 2004, second team 2005), while Damasco was named a third-team All-America this year.

COURTNEY ROSE NAMED AVCA DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Emory University junior outside hitter Courtney Rose as its 2005 AVCA Division III National Player of the Year.

Rose, a native of Palo Alto, Calif., averages 3.82 kills, 3.42 digs, 0.52 blocks and 0.49 aces per game entering this weekend as the top-ranked Eagles head into the NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinals versus University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She has helped Emory to a 32-5 overall record and the school's first-ever UAA Athletic Association championship. Rose was named the UAA most valuable player and is currently attacking at a .429 clip.

"We are thrilled for Courtney that she was chosen AVCA National Player of the Year!" Emory University Head Coach Jenny McDowell said. "This is a great tribute to her and the entire Emory volleyball program! Courtney is an extremely talented player, but what sets her apart from the rest is her competitive spirit. Courtney is without a doubt the greatest competitor that I have had the privilege of coaching. Thanks to the AVCA for selecting her for this special award."

Rose has turned in 19 double-figure kill matches, including a season-high 22 kills versus Austin College in the NCAA Division III Tournament South Regional final on Nov. 12. She has added 13 double-doubles (kills-digs) in 2005, including an 18-kill, 26-dig effort against NCAA Division II fourth-ranked North Alabama on Oct. 30. Rose has attacked at a .417 percentage against teams currently ranked among the top five of the CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll. She compiled a .900 attack percentage versus New York University with 18 kills on 20 errorless swings on Oct. 15.

Rose, who was selected to the 2004 AVCA All-America Second Team, has been named to five all-tournament teams this season. During her three seasons with Emory, she has 1,085 kills with a career attack percentage of .320. Rose holds career averages of 3.06 kills, 2.91 digs, 0.38 blocks and 0.37 aces per game.

The formal presentation of the 2005 AVCA Division III National Player of the Year will be made Dec. 16 in San Antonio at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet. The banquet, which will take place at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel, is held in conjunction with the 2005 AVCA Annual Convention and NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championship.

EMORY ADVANCES TO "ELITE EIGHT" WITH 3-1 WIN OVER AUSTIN
The Emory Eagles advanced to the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Austin College Kangaroos.  Emory, the top seed and No. 1-ranked team in the country won the match with 27-30, 30-21, 30-28, 30-25. 

With the victory Emory now faces the winner of the No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 11 Wisconsin-Eau Claire victor on Nov. 17 in Salem, Va.  This marks the third year in a row Emory has advanced to the "Elite Eight."

Leading the way for the Eagles tonight were the outside hitters Courtney Rose and Katrina Damasco.  Rose finished the match with 22 kills, while Damasco had 21.  Janet Bunning joined Rose and Damasco in double figures with 11.

Setter Catherine Zidow finished the match with 62 assists, while also contributing with three kills.  Ann Nicoletti provided an offensive spark with four service aces to lead the team.

Head coach Jenny McDowell was proud of the way her team played tonight against a good, seasoned ball club in Austin.

"Austin is an awesome team," McDowell said.  "They are deceptively good and fundamentally sound.  We knew we would have a fight on our hands tonight, but our team stepped up and played well tonight."

Defensively Rose led the way in digs with 24, while libero Kelly McIntosh finished with 16 and Madison Robelen 15.  Dani Huffman and Bunning led the way in blocks with five a piece.  Both tallied two solo blocks and three block assists. 

McDowell was very impressed by the play of Nicoletti and Robelen who stepped up to provide major contributions for the team.

"Ann (Nicoletti) really stepped up for us tonight," McDowell said.  "She passed well and had some great serves for us.  I also thought Madison (Robelen) play incredible tonight and really helped us out."

Diana Gonzalez led the way for the second seed and 24th-ranked Kangaroos.  Gonzalez had 15 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.  Veronica Stephens finished with 45 assists, while Jessica Rose had 21 digs.

EAGLES TO PLAY FOR SOUTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The Emory Eagles moved into the South Regional Championship match of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Southwestern University Pirates. Emory, seeded first and ranked No. 1 in the nation will face second seed and 24th-ranked Austin College in Saturday's final.

Emory jumped in front of the Pirates 2-0 with 30-21 and 30-17 victories before dropping the third game 24-30.  The Eagles then responded with a 30-17 victory to close out the match.

Emory head coach Jenny McDowell was pleased with her team's performance.

"We're moving on," McDowell said.  "I thought we played well tonight.  I was very impressed with how we responded in game four.  I am really excited for our captains, Katrina Damasco, Catherine Zidow and Courtney Rose.  They really took control during after the third game and during the fourth."

Leading the way on offense were five players who recorded double figures in kills.  Damasco finished the match with 17 kills, while Rose and freshman Dani Huffman had 15 a piece.  Freshman Maggie Baird finished with 13, while sophomore Janet Bunning had 12.  Bunning also led the team in kill percentage at .556.

Zidow turned in a season high 68 assists, while also finishing with two kills.  Emory's 12 service aces were highlighted by Bunning who recorded seven.

"Janet (Bunning) played really good for us," McDowell said.  "She had 12 kills and seven aces.  And as always Catherine (Zidow) played great."

The defense was led by sophomore libero Kelly McIntosh with 19 digs.  Freshman Madison Robelen and Rose also reached double figures in digs with 16 and 11, respectively. 

"Kelly McIntosh was awesome tonight," McDowell said.  "People really don't recognize was she does for us defensively.  I was just so proud of her tonight for the way she played."

With the win Emory now stands 32-5 on the season as it heads into Saturday's regional final at 7:00 p.m.  With a win the Eagles move on to Salem, Va., for the Division III "Elite Eight."

EMORY SET TO COMPETE IN SOUTH REGIONAL
The No.1-ranked Emory volleyball team is set to play host to the south regional of the 2005 NCAA Division III volleyball tournament. The event will be held, Thursday, Nov. 10 through Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

The Eagles will host a six-team regional with teams coming from Texas and Virginia. Austin College, Trinity University and Southwestern University are from Texas, while Washington & Lee University and Christopher Newport University are from Virginia.

Head coach Jenny McDowell looks forward to the chance at competing in the tournament on her team's home floor.

"We are very excited to be hosting the south region championship," McDowell said. "We have tremendous respect for our opponents this weekend. We will have to be at our very best if we want to win the regional. We are just excited to get back on the floor and compete."

EMORY RECEIVES POST SEASON HONORS
The No. 1 ranked Emory volleyball team received post season honors today from the University Athletic Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Fresh off its first ever UAA championship, Emory swept the awards announced by the conference. Junior outside hitter Courtney Rose was named most valuable player, while freshman right side Maggie Baird was voted freshman of the year. The coaching staff of the year also went to Emory.

Rose, who was a first-team selection a year ago, finished the regular season with 318 kills to lead the team and a hitting percentage of .438. She also had 45 service aces on the season and 10 assists. Defensively she was second on the team in digs with 283, while collecting 43 blocks (27 assist, 16 solo). Last season Rose was voted a second-team All-America by the AVCA.

Baird, turned in an oustanding effort in her first season of collegiate competition. She finished the year with 175 kills and a hitting percentage of .287. Baird also recorded 22 assists to go with her other offensive numbers. On defense she had 25 digs and 62 blocks (45 assist, 17 solo). Baird also received honorable mention for the All-UAA teams.

Joining Rose on the first team were seniors Katrina Damasco and Catherine Zidow. Damasco, an outside hitter, was an offensive force the Eagles this season, collecting 314 kills on a hitting percentage of .266. She led the team in service aces with 48, while also recording nine assists. On defense she was third on the team in digs with 252 and had 43 blocks (38 assist, five solo).

Zidow led the team in assists for the second-straight year with 693 as the team's starting setter. She also tallied 129 kills on a hitting percentage of .362. She also had 40 service aces during the season. On defense she finished with 187 digs for fourth highest on the team and 44 blocks (37 assist, seven solo).

Receiving honorable mention from the conference were junior middle hitter Kristin Anderson, sophomore middle hitter Janet Bunning and sophomore libero Kelly McIntosh.

Receiving honors from the AVCA for the South Region were Bunning, Damasco, Rose and Zidow. This marked the second year in a row that Rose and Zidow have received this honor. Baird was also named the South Region freshman of the year, while also receiving honorable mention. McIntosh joined Baird in receiving honorable mention.

EMORY EAGLES WIN UAA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The third-ranked Emory Eagles won the program's first ever UAA conference championship with a 3-0 victory over No. 1 seed and top-ranked Washington University. The second-seeded Eagles took down the Bears 30-25, 30-22, 30-27.

Head coach Jenny McDowell was very proud of her team's performance and that all the hard work put forth by the team led to the championship.

"I am so proud of this team," McDowell said. "They played with so much poise and confidence. The hard work the last three weeks to prepare for this really paid off. I am just so happy for the players. They stayed committed to the system and are deserving of winning the conference title."

Senior setter Catherine Zidow turned in another stellar performance. For the match she finished with 43 assists, six kills and 12 digs.

The due of junior Courtney Rose and senior Katrina Damasco once against stepped up during the match. Rose finished with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Damasco had 12 kills, five digs and two block assists. Freshman Maggie Baird also chipped in with seven kills, two block assists and one solo block.

This marked the third time in two years Emory has defeated the No. 1 team in the country. Last season the blue and gold beat New York University and Wittenberg when the two held the top spot in the country.

The Eagles, now 30-5 on the season and 11-1 in the UAA turn their attention to the NCAA tournament. Emory will play host to the NCAA South Region, Nov. 10-12 at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

EMORY TO PLAY FOR UAA TITLE
The third-ranked Emory Eagles moved into the University Athletic Association championship game with a 3-0 victory over Carnegie Mellon in Saturday's semifinals. Second-seeded Emory will face top seed and No. 1-ranked Washington University at 4:30 for the title.

The Eagles cruised into the final with a 30-22, 30-27, 30-19 victory. Senior Catherine Zidow turned in a solid peformance with 42 assists and four kills, while collecting nine digs.

Junior Courtney Rose led the team in kills with 12, while finishing with eight digs. Sophomore Janet Bunning was next with nine kills. She recorded four blocks for the match, two solo and two assist.

The Eagles now face Washington for the second time this season. Earlier in the year at the second UAA round robin event in St. Louis, Mo., Washington defeated Emory 24-30, 23-30, 27-30.

EAGLES DEFEAT NYU, MOVE INTO UAA SEMIFINALS
The third-ranked Emory Eagles moved into the semifinals of the 2005 University Athletic Association volleyball tournament after a 4 game victory over fourth-ranked New York University. The Eagles defeated the Violets 30-26, 30-13, 28-30, 30-28.

Leading the way for the Emory was sophomore Janet Bunning with 11 kills. Junior Courtney Rose joined Bunning in double figures with 10 to help lead the offense. Freshman Maggie Baird also chipped in with nine. Senior Catherine Zidow recorded 52 assists for the match, which is a season high. Rose also recorded two service aces to lead the team.

Defensively, freshman Dani Huffman finished with 16 blocks on 13 assists and three solo. Sophomore Kelly McIntosh had 14 digs, while Rose finished with 11. Freshman Madison Robelen finished in double figured as well with 10 digs.

This marked the second time this season Emory has defeated NYU. The Eagles previously won during the second round robin event at Washington University, also by four games.

They now await the loser of the Washington University-Carnegie Mellon University match. The blue and gold take the floor Saturday morning at 11:30.

EMORY DEFEATS BRANDEIS AND ROCHESTER TO OPEN UAA TOURNAMENT
The third-ranked Emory Eagles volleyball team opened the 2005 University Athletic Association tournament with two 3-0 victories. The Eagles first opponent, host Brandeis University, fell 30-19, 30-25, 30-12, while Rochester dropped a 30-23, 30-15, 30-12 decision.

Sophomore Janet Bunning turned in a solid match against Brandeis on both the offensive and defensive ends. She finished the match with nine kills and a hitting percentage of .720, while recording nine block assists and one solo block. Junior Kristin Anderson finished with seven kills and nine block assists and two solo blocks.

Sophomore Catherine Collins and freshman Dani Huffman added to the kills total with nine and seven kills, respectively.

Sophomore Kelly McIntosh led the team in digs with 12, while freshman Ellen Scott had 11. As a team the Eagles finished with 14 service aces. Sophomore Ann Nicoletti led with five.

In the second match against Rochester Huffman finished with 11 kills on a .780 hitting percentage. Bunning continued her solid play with seven kills, nine block assists and one solo block. The squad hit double figures for the second straight match in service aces with 10. Junior Courtney Rose led the way with five.

Defensively McIntosh had 17 digs, while Rose had 12.

Up next for the blue and gold is fourth-ranked New York University at 4:30 this afternoon. This marks the second time this season the second-seeded Eagles and third-seeded Violets have met. Earlier in the year at the second round robin event in St. Louis, Mo., Emory defeated NYU in four games 30-27, 30-22, 21-30, 30-24.

EAGLES DROP HARD-FOUGHT FOUR GAME MATCH TO NORTH ALABAMA
The third-ranked Emory Eagles volleyball team dropped a hard-fought four game match to North Alabama of Division II 32-30, 25-30, 18-30, 26-30 to close out the 2005 regular season.

Leading the offensive attack against the sixth-ranked Lions was junior Courtney Rose with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .378. Senior Katrina Damasco and freshman Dani Huffman contributed with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Senior Catherine Zidow turned in an oustanding performance as setter with 46 assists, while also recording six kills and two service aces.

Defensively, Rose came through with 26 digs, while sophomore Kelly McIntosh had 18. Damasco and Huffman each had two block assists each, while Zidow and Damasco had a block solo and a block assist each.

The Eagles now set their sites on post season play with the UAA Championships, Nov. 4-5 in Boston, Mass.

EMORY LOSES TO DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION
The third-ranked Emory Eagles volleyball team lost to second-ranked and defending national champion Juniata College 27-30, 27-30, 26-30.

Senior Catherine Zidow led the team with 28 assists and 14 digs. Junior Courtney Rose led Emory with ten kills and 3 service aces. She also added 10 digs for the Eagles.

Defensively, senior Katrina Damasco and sophomore Kelly McIntosh both recorded 13 digs.

Emory returns to action against the sixth-ranked Division II University of North Alabama Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1pm.


(Oct. 28)

EMORY FALLS TO SCAD IN FIVE GAMES
The third-ranked Emory Eagles volleyball team lost to Savannah College of Art & Design in five games, 26-30, 30-25, 30-28, 28-30, 10-15. SCAD is ranked 15th nationally in the NAIA.

Senior Katrina Damasco led the team with 15 kills and had 12 digs. Senior Catherine Zidow led the Eagles with 28 assists, while also adding 8 kills and 10 digs. The two seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony.

Defensively, junior Courtney Rose led Emory with 20 digs, while sophomore Kelly McIntosh added 19. Rose also led the team with six service aces and added 13 kills.

The Eagles return to action against defending national champion and second-ranked Juniata College Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7pm.

EMORY SELECTED TO HOST NCAA REGIONAL
The third-ranked Emory Eagles volleyball team was selected to play host to one of eight regionals for the 2005 NCAA Division III volleyball tournament. The regional will be held Nov. 10-12 at the Woodruff P.E. Center on the campus of Emory University.

This marks the sixth time the Eagles have played host to an NCAA volleyball tournament event. They previously hosted in 2004, 2002, 2000, 1999 and 1996.


(Oct. 22)

EAGLES WIN EMORY NATIONAL INVITATIONAL
The third-ranked Emory Eagles won the Emory National Invitational after winning two matches on the final day. Emory opened the day with a 3-1 win over Webster (Mo.) before sweeping Tufts (Mass.) 3-0.

Emory defeated Webster for its third win of the tournament 30-17, 30-22, 25-30, 30-19. Junior Courtney Rose turned in an all-around solid effort with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .565. She also had 11 digs and two solo blocks. Joining Rose in double figures for kills were junior Kristin Anderson with 11, senior Katrina Damasco with 10 and freshman Dani Huffman with 10.

Combining for 64 of the 66 assists were senior Catherine Zidow and freshmen Ellen Scott and Madison Robelen. Zidow recorded 31, while Scott and Robelen had 22 and 11, respectively.

Sophomore Kelly McIntosh led the way on defense with 20 digs.

The Eagles closed out their fourth tournament win of the season by sweeping Tufts 30-15, 30-26, 30-21. Damasco finished the match with 13 kills, while also adding two service aces. Sophomore Janet Bunning finished with 11 digs to join Damasco in double figures.

Scott led the team in assits with 26, while Zidow finished with 24. The two also combined for 6 service aces, with Zidow hitting four and Scott two. McIntosh also chipped in with three.

Rose led the defensive charges with 16 digs, while Huffman had five blocks (one solo, two assist).

Janet Bunning was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Katrina Damasco, Courtney Rose and Catherine Zidow joined her on the all-tournament team. Rounding out the team was Katie Crumley of Millikin, Christina Siegel of Heidelberg and Kay Lutostanski of Tufts.

Emory returns to action Friday, Oct. 28 when it plays host to Savannah College of Art and Design. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.

JENNY MCDOWELL WINS 300TH CAREER MATCH
Emory head coach Jenny McDowell won her 300th career match on Friday as her third-ranked Eagles claimed two victories to open play at the Emory National Invitational. Her 300th win came during the afternoon opener where Emory dropped Meredith College 3-0 before defeating a solid Millikin University 3-0 to close out the day.

The afternoon match saw the Eagles defeat Meredith College in three games, 30-12, 30-18 and 30-14.  Leading the way on offense was freshman Dani Huffman with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .429.  Junior Kristen Anderson chipped in with eight kills.  Freshman Madison Robelen led the team in assists with 21, while fellow freshman Ellen Scott had three service aces.

The defense was led by sophomore Maggie Ramm with seven digs and Anderson came away with six blocks on four assists and two solos.

The evening match against Millikin was hard fought and saw Emory come out on top 30-26, 30-17, 30-28. Leading the way against the Big Blue was senior Katrina Damasco. Damasco turned in a solid effort both offensively and defensively with 14 kills and 16 digs, as well as two block assists. Sophomore Janet Bunning also turned in double figures in kills with 10, while junior Courtney Rose had 12 kills and 10 digs to go with three service aces.

Senior Catherine Zidow and freshman Ellen Scott combined for 45 assists, with Zidow recording 24 and Scott 21. Other top contributors to the match included sophomore Kristin Anderson with eight kills, freshman Maggie Baird with seven kills and sophomore Kelly McIntosh with 13 digs.

Emory continues play Saturday against Webster University (Mo.) at 12:30 and Tufts University (Mass.) at 5:30.  Admission is free to the public.

EMORY SPLITS ON FINAL DAY OF UAA ROUND ROBIN PLAY
The third-ranked Emory volleyball team split its final two matches of UAA regular season play at the second round robin event. The Eagles fell to top-ranked Washington University on the day's opening match 24-30, 23-30, 27-30 before rebounding to sweep Brandeis University 30-18, 30-10, 30-20. Emory now stands 21-2 and 6-1 in the UAA.

In the first match against Washington, the blue and gold were led by junior Courtney Rose with 13 kills. Freshman Maggie Baird chipped in with six kills on 10 attemps for a hitting percentage of .500.

Senior Catherine Zidow finished the match with 22 assists and a hitting percentage of .360, while fellow senior Katrina Damasco had eight kills, seven digs and two service aces.

The final match of the day against Brandeis saw Emory get back to its winning ways and was led by sophomore Janet Bunning who finished with nine kills and a .538 hitting percentage. Sophomore Ann Nicoletti also had nine kills and freshman Dani Huffman had six kills and a hitting percentage of .455. Junior Kristen Anderson added to the victory with five blocks, four kills (.500 hitting percentage) and two service aces.

Emory returns home to the Woodruff P.E. Center to host the Emory National Invitational, Oct. 21-22. The Eagles open play on Friday against Meredith College at 4:30 p.m. and Millikin University at 7:00 p.m.


(Oct. 15)

EAGLES DEFEAT NO. 4 NYU
The third-ranked Emory volleyball team upped its win streak to 19 matches in the second round robin event at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. In a battle of top five teams, Emory defeated No. 4 New York University 30-27, 30-22, 21-30, 30-24.

Emory was led by junior Courtney Rose with 18 kills on 20 attempts with no errors. She was joined on the outside my senior Katrina Damasco with 15 kills. On the day the two combined for 33 kills to lead the offensive attack.

Sophomore Janet Bunning also had a solid match, recording 10 kills on 15 attempts while only have one error. Sophomore Ann Nicoletti provided a big lift as well with three service aces.

Defensively senior Catherine Zidow and sophomore Kelly McIntosh combined for 20 digs. Zidow turned in nine, while McIntosh had 11.

The final match of the afternoon saw Emory drop Carnegie Mellon 30-26, 30-27, 30-28. Leading the way was Damasco with 15 kills and three service aces. Junior Kristin Anderson had three solo blocks and six kills. Freshman Ellen Scott contributed with 18 assists and seven digs, while McIntosh had 11 digs.

The Eagles close out regular season conference action Sunday with two more matches. The first match at 11:30 a.m. has them facing No. 1 ranked Washington University, followed by Brandeis at 2:00 p.m.

EMORY VOLLEYBALL WINS 17TH STRAIGHT
The third-ranked Emory volleyball team claimed its 17th-straight match with a 30-22, 30-17, 30-19 victory against regional foe Maryville College (Tenn.) Tuesday night in Maryville.  Emory now stands 18-1 on the season.

Offensively, junior Kristen Anderson with 10 kills led the Eagles.  Senior Katrina Damasco and junior Courtney Rose were next with six kills each.  Damasco also recorded three assists to lead the team.  Senior Catherine Zidow finished with 17 assists, while freshman Madison Robelen had 14.

Sophomore Kelly McIntosh finished the match with 12 digs to lead the defense, while sophomore Janet Bunning led the team with five blocks (two solos and three assists).

Emory, winners of 51 consecutive games in its 17-match win streak, returns to conference action this coming weekend in St. Louis, Mo.  It takes on No. 6 New York University and Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.  Sunday the Eagles will face their biggest challenge of the season when they go against No. 1 Washington University (Mo.).  EU concludes the round robin event against Brandeis University (Mass.) in the afternoon.


(Oct. 6) EAGLES BEAT BERRY COLLEGE
The third-ranked Emory volleyball team beat Berry College 30-21, 30-14, and 30-19. The Eagles have now won 16 consecutive matches and 48 consecutive games.

Sophomore Janet Bunning led the Eagles with 11 kills and four assisted blocks. Senior Catherine Zidow led the team with 27 assists, while also adding eight kills. Freshman Ellen Scott had 18 asissts and led Emory in service aces with three. Defensively, sophomore Kelly McIntosh had 20 digs in the match.

The Eagles return to action on October 11 when they travel to Maryvile College (Tenn.) for a 5 p.m. game.


(Oct. 2) EAGLES WIN THREE IN FIRST UAA EVENT
The third-ranked Emory volleyball team went 3-0 over the weekend in the first UAA round robin event of the season at Case Western Reserve University.

The Eagles defeated Chicago on Saturday 30-12, 30-13, 30-23. On Sunday they took down Rochester 30-16, 30-20, 30-21 and Case Western Reserve 30-20, 30-14, 30-19.

The Eagles had several standouts over the weekend. Freshman Maggie Baird, competing in her first UAA event, was a force in terms of hitting and blocking. Against Rochester she recorded 10 blocks, while again Case Western Reserve she had 10 kills.

Junior Courtney Rose and sophomore Kelly McIntosh continued their solid defensive play. Against Case Western Reserve, McIntosh recorded 18 digs and five service aces.

Rose and senior Katrina Damasco continued to provide outstanding performances as outside hitters, each hitting .500 for the weekend.

Senior Catherine Zidow had an all-around good game against CWR with 18 assists, three kills, three service aces and three blocks.

EU returns to action Thursday night when it plays host to Berry College (Ga.) at 7:00 p.m. in the Woodruff P.E. Center.


 

(Sept. 27) EMORY VOLLEYBALL MOVES TO NO. 3 IN LATEST AVCA POLL
The Emory volleyball team continued its climb in the latest CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches top 25 moving from No. 4 to No. 3. The Eagles (13-1) are winners of 12 consecutive matches without dropping a game.

Emory opened the season ranked No. 5 and has steadily moved up the rankings. They have won three tournaments already this season; the Washington & Lee Invitational, the Emory Classic and the Emory Invitational.

Head coach Jenny McDowell and her squad enter conference play this weekend at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for the first of two round robin events. The second is to take place at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 15-16.


(Sept. 24)

EU WINS EMORY VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL
The fourth-ranked Emory volleyball team upped its win streak to 13 and its record to 14-1 while claiming the Emory Volleyball Invitational. The day opened with the Eagles sweeping past Le Tourneau University (Texas) 30-14, 30-10 and 30-15. The final match of the day saw them take down Spring Hill College (Ala.) 30-20, 30-23 and 30-28.

The match against Le Tourneau had the blue and gold recording 50 kills, with freshman Dani Huffman leading the way with 12. Sophomore Ann Nicoletti and freshman Katie Downs each recorded 10. For the match, Nicoletti also had six service aces to lead the team. Freshman setter Madison Robelen was the team leader in assists with 28.

On the defensive end, sophomore Jennifer Macy had 14 digs, while Nicoletti and Robelen had 13 a piece.

The final match of the tournament against Spring Hill had Emory facing its toughest challenge for the weekend. Senior Katrina Damasco led the way for the blue and gold with 14 kills, eight of which came in the final game. Junior Courtney Rose was second in kills with eight. Freshman Ellen Scott continued her stellar play as setter by recording 38 assists.

Defensively, sophomore Kelly McIntosh led with 20 digs, while Damasco and Scott reached double figures as well with 18 and 10, respectively.

Damasco was named tournament most valuable player. Joining her on the all-tournament team from Emory was Rose and junior Kristin Anderson. Christine Gladysz and Laura Maurer from Washington & Lee and  Tess Jezik from Spring Hill rounded out the team.

Emory takes the week off before entering conference play in the University Athletic Association's first round robin event at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 1-2. The Eagles will face the University of Chicago on Saturday and the University of Rochester and Case Western Reserve on Sunday.

EAGLES OPEN WITH TWO WINS AT EMORY INVITATIONAL
The fourth-ranked Emory volleyball team opened play at its own Emory Invitational with two 3-0 victories. The first match of the day saw the Eagles blast Regis College (Mass.) 30-8, 30-12 and 30-9. The final match of the evening had EU upending region for Washington & Lee University (Va.) 30-26, 30-28 and 30-20.

The match against Regis saw Emory mainly use its reserves. The offense pummeled Regis with freshman Natalie Engmann recording 11 kills and junior Kristen Anderson turning in eight. Sophomore Ann Nicoletti recorded 11 service aces for the contest, while freshman setter Madison Robelen had 29 assists. Leading the way for the defense was sophomore Maggie Ramm with six digs.

The final match of the evening had the Eagles facing a formidable foe in Washington & Lee. The contest was tight from the beginning with senior Katrina Damasco and junior Courtney Rose helping to lead the offensive attack with 14 and 15 kills, respectively. Freshman Ellen Scott and senior Catherine Zidow provided excellent assistance, combining for 49 assists. Scott recorded 30, while Zidow ended the contest with 19.

Junior Kelly McIntosh came away with 19 defensive digs, while sophomore Janet Bunning had 5 block assists and junior Kristin Anderson had two solo blocks.

Now 11-1 on the season, Emory continues play Saturday against Le Tourneau University (Texas) at 11:30 a.m. and Spring Hill College (Ala.) at 4:00 at the Woodruff P.E. Center. Admission is free to the public.

EAGLES WIN EMORY VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC
The fourth-ranked Emory volleyball team defended its home turf and came away with the Emory Classic championship. The Eagles defeated Southwestern University (Texas) in the finals 30-19, 30-18 and 30-17. Earlier in the day EU slammed regional foe Maryville College (Tenn.) in the semifinals 30-21, 30-20 and 30-18.

In a rematch of Friday's pool play, Emory jumped out in front of Southwestern and never looked back. Junior Courtney Rose led the team with 20 kills and 11 digs. Senior Katrina Damasco, junior Kristin Anderson and sophomore Janet Bunning all recorded nine kills a piece. Damasco also had 11 digs and sophomore Kelly McIntosh recorded 10 to help continue the Eagles solid defensive play.

The blue and gold opened the day with a 3-0 drubbing of regional foe Maryville College (Tenn.) by scores of 30-21, 30-20 and 30-18. Ellen Scott highlighted the match with 28 assists. Freshman Dani Huffman led the squad with kills, totaling 13, while junior Kristin Anderson and sophomore Ann Nicoletti had 10 each. Sophomore Kelly McIntosh led the way on defense with 10 digs.

Kristin Anderson of Emory was named the tournament's most valuable player. Joining her on the all-tournament team from Emory were Katrina Damasco, Courtney Rose and Kelly McIntosh. Ferren Ancar of Huntingdon, Misti White of Southwestern and Megan Finch of Allegheny rounded out the team.

Emory, now 9-1 on the year, takes the week off before returning to the Woodruff P.E. Center next weekend for the Emory Invitational, Sept. 23-24. Admission is free to the public.

EAGLES SWEEP THEIR WAY THROUGH FIRST DAY OF EMORY CLASSIC
The fourth-ranked Emory Eagles opened the home portion of their schedule with two victories in the first day of the Emory Classic at the Woodruff P.E. Center. Emory's first match of the day saw them take down Huntingdon College, while the day's finale had them defeating Southwestern University.

EU's match against Huntingdon saw them win by scores of 30-22, 30-10 and 30-16. Leading the way for the Eagles were freshman Dani Huffman and sophomore Ann Nicoletti with nine kills a piece. Junior Kristin Anderson also chipped in with eight. Freshman Madison Robelen contributed with 13 assists to lead the way, while senior Catherine Zidow and freshman Ellen Scott each had eight.

The blue and gold's second match of the evening saw them face a solid opponent in Southwestern of Georgetown, Texas. Emory once again swept the match, winning 30-18, 30-21 and 30-26. Junior Courtney Rose turned in fine performance, highlighted by 15 kills. Sophomore Janet Bunning and Kristin Anderson were next with 10 kills a piece, while senior Katrina Damasco had nine. Once again, Zidow and Scott came through with assists, recording 26 and 17, respectively. Damasco led the team defensively with 18 digs.

Up next for the Eagles (7-1) will be regional foe Maryville College (Tenn.) in Saturday's first semifinal at 11:30 a.m. The other semifinal pits Allegheny College (Pa.) against Southwestern at 2:00 p.m. The consolation match has Huntingdon against Piedmont at 11:30. Admission is free to the public.

VOLLEYBALL MOVES TO NO. 4 IN LATEST CSTV/AVCA TOP 25
The Emory Eagle volleyball team moved up one spot in the latest CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches poll. The Eagles (5-1) were ranked No. 5, but moved up after winning four matches this past weekend.

Emory claimed the Washington & Lee Invitational with wins over Centre College, Averett University, Washington & Lee University and Christopher Newport University All four matches saw Emory win in three games. Senior Katrina Damasco was named the tournament most valuable player, while senior Catherine Zidow and junior Courtney Rose joined her on the all-tournament team.

Head coach Jenny McDowell and her squad return to the Woodruff P.E. Center for their home opener as part of the Emory Volleyball Classic. The blue and gold open Friday with Huntingdon College at 4:30 p.m., followed by a 7:00 p.m. match with Southwestern University. Saturday features the tournament semifinals at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., with the championship match slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.


(Sept. 10)

EAGLES WIN WASHINGTON & LEE INVITATIONAL
The fifth-ranked Emory volleyball team claimed the Washington & Lee Invitational championship by defeating Christopher Newport 30-26, 31-29 and 30-26.

In the championship match, Emory was led by Courtney Rose with 15 kills, while Sophomore Kelly McIntosh led the team with 15 digs. Using a 6-2 offense, freshman Ellen Scott and senior Catherine Zidow combined for 31 assists.

Earlier in the day, Emory upended host school Washington & Lee in the semifinals 30-26, 31-29 and 30-26. Senior Katrina Damasco continued her stellar play for the season with 10 kills and four service aces, while Zidow contributed with nine kills. Other top performers in the match included Scott with four service aces and freshman Maggie Baird and junior Kristin Anderson chipping in with four blocks a piece.

For the tournament Damasco was voted most valuable player. Joining her on the all-tournament team were Rose and Zidow.

Jenny McDowell's squad returns to the Woodruff P.E. Center for their home opener Friday, Sept. 16, as part of the Emory Volleyball Classic. The Eagles open the tournament with Huntingdon College and Southwestern University.

EMORY VOLLEYBALL WINS TWO DURING FIRST DAY AT WASHINGTON& LEE

The Emory volleyball team got off to a good start at the Washington & Lee Invitational in Lexington, Va., by defeating two south region opponents. The first match saw the Eagles drop Centre College in three games, while the second match had Emory defeating Averett University three games to zero.

The Eagles took down Centre College 30-22, 30-24 and 30-14. Senior Katrina Damasco continued her stellar play by leading the team with 12 kills and 13 digs. She also recorded four service aces.

During the second match sophomore Janet Bunning came through to lead the team in kills with 10 as Emory swept Averett 30-19, 30-22 and 30-22. Fellow sophomore Kelly McIntosh chipped in with 10 digs.

The second match also saw Emory use a 6-2 offense that had freshman Ellen Scott and senior Catherine Zidow setting. For the match Scott came through with five aces. Maggie Baird, another freshman, turned in a solid performance with seven kills and one block.

With the victories the fifth-ranked Eagles move to 3-1 on the season. Emory returns to action Saturday in the Invitational, meeting the winner of the Washington & Lee and Catholic match.

VOLLEYBALL SPLITS PAIR AT WEST GEORGIA
The fifth-ranked Emory volleyball team split a pair of games Saturday at the University of West Georgia. The Eagles spotted Lee University (Tenn.) two games in the first match before mounting a comeback to take the win. In the second game Emory fell to Division II West Georgia in four games.

The first match saw Emory fall 29-31 and 24-30 to the 12th-ranked Flames of NAIA, before winning the final three games 30-28, 31-29 and 15-13. Highlighting the match was the stellar play of senior Katrina Damasco. Damasco recorded 30 kills while hitting an amazing .370. For the match senior Courtney Rose had 18 digs while freshman setter Ellen Scott had 54 assists.

The second match against host West Georgia went to four games with Emory taking the first 30-17. The Braves responded by winning the next three 28-30, 26-30 and 29-31. Damasco again led the team with 19 kills and Scott finished with 53 assists. Freshman Maggie Baird recorded 8 kills while hitting .333. She also recorded four blocks.

For the day, Emory started three freshmen. Baird, Scott and Dani Huffman opened their collegiate careers with starts.

EMORY RANKED 5TH IN PRESEASON POLL
The Emory University volleyball team is ranked fifth in the Division III national preseason poll conducted by the American Coaches Volleyball Association (AVCA). The fifth-place ranking marks the highest preseason ranking in the history of the program.

The Eagles' preseason ranking eclipses the 2004 ranking of sixth. They were eighth in 2003, seventh in 2002 and 11th in 2001 and 2000.

Head Coach Jenny McDowell's squad is coming off a 31-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals. The squad returns four starters and 15 letterwinners from last year's team that also finished second in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Second-team All-America selection Courtney Rose and third-team All-America Katherine Zidow return to lead the Eagles.

Emory joins fellow UAA members Washington University and New York University in the poll. Washington is ranked No.1 while NYU is ranked third.

The Eagles travel to Carrollton, Ga., to open the season, Saturday, Sept. 3, in a double-header against Lee University (Tenn.) and the University of West Georgia.
