2006 Athletes Of The Week

(Nov. 13) -- Sophomore Maggie Baird turned in a pair of solid outings this past weekend at the NCAA South Region hosted by Trinity University.  Playing in her hometown, Baird posted a career-high 19 kills and hit 34.3 percent (19-7-35) in a five-game win against Austin College before posting 10 kills in a four-game setback to No. 5-ranked Trinity.  In addition to her kills production, Baird registered seven assists and seven block assists. Baird concluded the year with 12 matches of 10 or more kills. 


(Nov. 6) -- Sophomore Maggie Baird's steady play helped Emory to a runner-up finish at the UAA Championships, Nov. 3-4. In the team's five matches, the 6-foot-1 Baird recorded a 43.6 hitting percentage (40-9--71) while totaling 10 total blocks. In the opening match against Chicago, she posted nine kills and hit 61.5 percent in a four-game win. She followed that with a hitting effort of 60 percent (7-1--10) against Brandeis. As Emory prepares for the NCAA Tournament, Baird is averaging 2.28 kills per game and owns a 31.7 attack percentage. She is third on the squad in blocks (0.76 bpg).


(Oct. 30) -- Freshman Alysse Meyer totaled 18 kills and 13 digs in matches against the University of West Georgia and No. 1-ranked Juniata over the weekend. Meyer recorded 11 kills in the West Georgia contest before postings seven terminations along with a season-high 10 digs against Juniata. Meyer has 16 matches of double-figure kills to her credit this season and stands No. 2 on the squad in kills per game (3.22 kpg) and hitting percentage (32.2%).


(Oct. 23) -- Sophomore setter Madison Robelen (Boca Raton, FL) helped the Eagles to four wins and a team title at the Emory National Invitational this past weekend.  Robelen directed the Emory offense with deft precision, doling out an average of 13.5 assists per game in the four matches including a total of 60, tying her career high in a four-game win over Illinois Wesleyan.  While Robelen's setting helped Emory hit 40 percent over the weekend, she was solid on the defensively, registering 60 digs including a career-best tying 23 against Illinois Wesleyan.  Robelen is 12th on Emory's seasonal chart in assists with 998, just two shy of becoming the seventh different player to crack the 1,000-plus mark in a season.


(Oct. 16) -- Junior Janet Bunning turned in a huge weekend for the Eagles, helping the squad to a 3-1 mark in UAA Round Robin II play.  In the 12 games she played in (Emory played a total of 15 games during the weekend) The 5-foot-10 Bunning hit 58.8 percent (52-5-80) over four matches while coming up with 25 digs, 17 blocks (7-10) and three service aces.  In a five-game contest against No. 2-ranked Washington, Bunning recorded a career-high 25 kills, hit 60 percent in the match (25-1-40), and registered eight digs and eight assists (1-7).  In the final match of the weekend against No. 14-ranked NYU, she racked up 13 kills, hit 52.3 percent (13-2-21), and chalked up eight digs in aiding the Eagles to a three-game win.


(Oct. 10) -- After sitting out the Round Robin I the weekend of Sept. 29-30, freshman Hillary Buren (Kansas City, MO) returned to the lineup at the Wittenberg Invitational and came up with 40 kills, including a team-high 16 terminations in the Capital match.  Buren followed that performance with a 12-kill afternoon against Catholic University.  Buren has 10 matches this year of 10 or more kills to her credit.


(Oct. 2) -- Freshman Alysse Meyer stepped up in a big way over the weekend in helping the Eagles to three wins in the UAA Round Robin I.  The 6-foot Meyer led the squad in kills in all three matches including a career-best 19 vs. Carnegie Mellon, 14 against Brandeis and 13 against Rochester.  For the weekend, Meyer hit a keen 33.6 percent (46-12-101), totaled 11 digs and 10 total blocks (0-10).  In the final match of the weekend vs. Rochester, Meyer posted a 45.8 attack percentage (13-2-24), three digs and four blocks.


(Sept. 25) -- Junior Janet Bunning earned a spot on the Emory All-Tournament Team this past weekend after helping the No. 10-ranked Eagles to wins in three of four matches. Over the course of the four matches (13 games) She recorded a team-leading 51 kills, a 31.7 hitting percentage (51-17-107), a team-best 57 digs and 14 blocks (0-14).   She paced the team in kills and digs against Washington & Lee (16/16), in kills against No. 16-ranked Mount Saint Joseph (15) and in kills against No. 22-ranked Carthage (13). She hit a blistering 58.3 percent (16-2-24) against Washington & Lee, the third-best effort by an Emory player this season.


(Sept. 18) -- Emory University sophomore middle hitter Dani Huffman enjoyed a fine weekend of play as she helped the Eagles to wins in two of the three matches she played in at the Southwestern University Invitational.  In contests against Southwestern University, East Texas Baptist University and No. 15 Austin College, the 5-foot-11 Huffman recorded 47 kills, an attack percentage of 42.6 percent (47-9-89) and 16 total blocks (6-10-16).  Against Southwestern Univ., she posted a career-high 19 kills while chipping in eight blocks (3-5).  In the final match vs. Austin College, she hit a blistering 54.2 percent, (13-0-24).  So far this year, she has recorded double figures in attacks in six of the eight matches she has appeared in.


(Sept. 11) -- Emory University junior Janet Bunning earned MVP honors of the Emory Classic this past weekend as her steadying influence helped the Eagles to four wins en route to the championship.  In the four matches, that included 15 games, Bunning 43 kills, 20 blocks (5-15), 40 digs and seven service aces. In three of the matches, she finished with double-figures in kills and had two matches with double figures in digs including 23 against Bethel that tied her career high and that also represent the high-water mark by an Emory player this year. In the championship match of the Emory Classic vs. Hiram, Bunning hit a season-high 44.4 percent (11-3-18), and registered three service aces and four blocks (1-3). 


(Sept. 6) -- Emory University junior Janet Bunning recorded a team-high 30 kills over nine games this past weekend as the Eagles opened their 2006 season.  The 5-foot-10 Bunning posted a team-best 13 kills against Lee University while chipping in six blocks (1-5) and 14 digs.  In a five-game battle against Savannah College of Art & Design, Bunning posted career bests in kills (17) and digs (23) while registering four block assists.  After two matches, she leads the team in kills per game (3.33 kpg), second in digs (4.11 dpg) and blocks per game (1.11 bpg).
