Emory finished 2007 with an overall record of 33-7. The Eagles'
victory total marked the program's ninth season of 30 or more
victories during the 12-year tenure of head coach Jenny McDowell
and was the 14th consecutive winning campaign.
Using a well-crafted combination of battle-tested veterans and some
bright young talent, Emory mainatined its reputation as one of the
top programs in the nation. Along the way during the 2007 season,
the Eagles accomplished the following.
** Capturing its second University Athletic Association
championship in the last three years, topping Washington University
in a five-game thriller in the title match.
** Earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 12th consecutive
year, advancing to the quarterfinal round for the third time in the
last four seasons.
** Concluding the campaign ranked fifth nationally by the American
Volleyball Coaches Association. The Eagles have been ranked
in the top 20 in every weekly poll by the AVCA for the last 11
seasons.
** Ranking prominently on the national scene in a number of
statistical categories including second in hitting percentage
(30.9%), third in kills per game (16.3 kpg) and fifth in assists
game (14.7 apg). The team's kills per-game and assists per-game
marks established school seasonal records.
** Having two players earn AVCA All-America recognition.
As usual, the Eagles played a demanding schedule that included 12
matches against nine teams that earned bids to NCAA postseason
play. The Woodruff PE Center provided Emory with a definite
home-court advantage with the squad recording a 15-2
slate. Over the last four years, the Eagles stand an
impressive 63-11 in home matches.
Senior middle Janet Bunning was the glue that kept
the team together in 2007. The 5-foot-10 performer earned First
Team All-America honors for the second straight year, becoming the
first Emory player to garner first-team acclaim in back-to-back
seasons. One of the most versatile players in the game, Bunning
racked up a bushel full of awards including being named the
University Athletic Association's Most Valuable Player. Bunning led
the UAA and tied for seventh nationally in hitting percentage
(40.4%). She ranked prominently in a host of other UAA statistical
categories including kills per game (5th, 3.57 kpg), blocks (6th,
0.90 bpg) and digs (25th, 2.35 dpg). A First Team All-South Region
pick for the third consecutive campaign, Bunning registered double
figures in kills in 24 of the 32 matches she played in including
three of 20 or more terminations. Janet either led or tied for the
team lead in kills in nine matches and compiled 12 outings of
double-doubles (kills/digs). Career-wise, Bunning wound up her
Emory career ranked in the top 10 in a bevy of categories including
kills (8th, 1032), kills per game (5th, 3.20 kpg), attack
percentage (2nd, 36.7%) and total blocks (4th, 352).
Junior Madison Robelen ran the Emory offense with
a deftness and precision often affiliated with high-performance
setters and was recognized for her play by earning Second Team
All-America kudos. A first-team pick to the All-UAA and All-South
Region Teams, Robelen led all conference players and ranked fourth
nationally in assists with a 13.35 per-game average. In addition,
she established school seasonal marks in assists (1,816) and
assists per game. Her career-high 68 assists against Washington
University (Oct. 13) represented the third-highest total in Emory
history and was one of seven matches where she doled out 60 or more
assists during '07. Madision ended her third year in the program in
the No. 2 spot on Emory's all-time list in assists with 3,403.
Junior outside hitter Dani Huffman provided the
Eagles with a consistent and dynamic offensive threat with the
5-foot-11 attacker manufacturing 23 matches of double-figure kills.
Huffman was efficient in her termination attempts, posting a 38.9
hitting percentage, good for the No. 2 spot on club and University
Athletic Association lists and 12th-place nationally. The team
leader and No. 3 performer among league players in blocks (1.02
bpg), Huffman stood eighth on the UAA ladder in kills per game
(3.20 kpg). Dani was tabbed for a first-team position on the
All-UAA Team for the first time in her career and was an
honorable-mention choice on the all-region squad.
Along with Janet Bunning, libero Maggie Ramm was
the other Emory senior that closed out her career. A premier
defensive player, Ramm rewrote the Eagles' record book in season
and career categories en route to earning First Team All-University
Athletic Association recognition. Ramm's 574 digs established a
school seasonal mark while her 4.70 per-game average ranked her
third on the UAA ladder (first on Emory seasonal chart). An
honorable-mention choice to the all-region team, Ramm doled out a
season-high 34 dgs against Lee University (second on school's match
list). She was credited with 31 digs, tied for third on EU's
single-match list, in contests against Washington University on two
occasions (Nov. 3 & Nov. 15). She posted double figures in digs
in 26 of the 35 matches she appeared in including 11 of 20 or more.
While her solid defensive play kept Emory alive in many points, she
also helped out on the offensive end by dishing out 52 service aces
and standing 10th in the UAA in aces per game (0.43 apg). Ramm
closed out her career as the school's all-time leader in digs
(1321) and ranked 13th in aces (142).
Sophomore Alysse Meyer enjoyed a strong second
half of the season and ended up No. 1 on the team and No. 2 among
University Athletic Association players with a 3.86 kills per-game
average. The 6-foot Meyer, a Second Team All-UAA selection, blasted
away for 432 kills in 2007, good for sixth place on the school's
seasonal listing. Meyer was arguably the team's most dominant
player over the last month of the year, picking up 10 or more kills
in 12 of her last 14 matches and hitting a blistering 40.1 percent
(216-43--431) during that stretch. Included in that streak of
matches was a career-best 26 kills against Washington University in
the UAA title match, the high-water mark by an Emory player during
the season, and a 57.6 attack percentage effort (20-1--33) against
Austin College in the NCAA Tournament. All totaled, Meyer, who led
or shared for the team high in kills in 15 contests, posted double
digits in kills in 23 of her 37 matches.
Junior Maggie Baird went about her right-side
duties in a workman-like way and earned Second Team All-University
Athletic Association honors, the third straight season of
conference recognition. Playing in 37 matches, the 6-foot-1 Baird
averaged 2.29 kills and 0.62 blocks per game, third on the team and
13th among UAA players. Her attacking ability kept the opposition
honest at the net and she finished the year with 11 matches of
double-figure kills, eight of those coming over the course of the
last 11 contests.
