EMORY VOLLEYBALL DROPS NCAA QUARTERFINAL MATCH TO WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY - FINISHES YEAR 33-7

(Nov. 15) - The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team saw its season come to an end Thursday evening as it came out on the short end of a four-game decision to No. 4-ranked Washington University in NCAA quarterfinal action.  The Bears advance to the national semifinals following a 30-19, 21-30, 30-27, 30-18 victory over the Eagles.  Emory closes out its season at 33-7 while Washington Univ., boosted its record to 31-5.

In a defensive-oriented match that saw both squads hit well below their season average, the Bears grabbed control of the hotly-contested match midway through the third game.  After the teams split the first two games, Emory took a 14-9 lead in game three following a kill by junior Dani Huffman (San Diego, CA).  However, Washington responded with a 14-5 run to assume a 23-19 advantage.  After falling behind by a 29-24 count, the Eagles stayed alive with three straight points on a kill by junior Maggie Baird (San Antonio, TX), a service ace by sophomore Vista Murphy and a kill by senior Janet Bunning (Washington, DC).  Despite the late charge, the rally fell short.

In the fourth game, Emory trailed by an 8-7 margin before six straight points increased the Bears' advantage to 14-7.  The closest the Eagles were able to from that point was six points.

After dropping the first game, Emory bounced back in strong fashion in game two, racing out to an insurmountable 14-4 cushion en route to the win.  The Eagles used a sterling defensive performance, limiting the Bears to just a .017 attack percentage.

Bunning led Emory's offensive attack with 17 kills while contributing 13 digs, her 12th double-double of the year.  Baird registered a season-high tying 16 kills, her 11th  outing of double digits in that category.  Sophomore Alysee Meyer (Stockton, CA) and Huffman rounded out the team's double-figure attackers with 14 and 11, respectively.  Junior setter Madison Robelen (Boca Raton, FL) dished out 58 assists while senior Maggie Ramm (Tampa, FL) led all players with 31 digs.

For the match, Emory finished with a .189 hitting percentage (66-29-196) while Washington Univ., posted a .237 mark (66-20-194).  The Eagles held a 95-84 edge in digs while the Bears finished with a 15-6 advantage in total blocks.

"I thought that Dani Huffman and Kaitlin did a good job in the middle and it was fun to have Courtney Rose back on the court again.  Our passers did a great job and were right on the money most of the night.  I give St. Thomas lot of credit.  They keep good defense and are tough to play against."
