The No. 1-ranked Emory University volleyball team remained undefeated following a pair of victories on the first day of the Washington & Lee Tournament. The Eagles raised their overall record to 7-0 following a 3-1 decision (25-22, 27-29, 25-12, 25-16) over Christopher Newport and a 3-0 triumph (25-20, 25-14, 25-15) against Southern Virginia.
Senior Alysse Meyer and sophomore Ali
Wright led the way in the opener against CNU with nine and
eight kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Natalie
Schonefeld dished out 32 assists while senior Vista Murphy
keyed the defensive effort with 15 digs.
Freshman Breanah Bourque set the pace in the
nightcap against Southern Virginia, racking up a team-high 11
terminations without making a miscue in 12 attack attempts.
Freshman Jessica McAlvany and junior
Amelia McCall each contributed seven kills.
Schonefeld recorded 28 assists over two sets before freshman
Emily Reiser directed the offense in the third
game, totaling 12 assists. Wright also turned in a dominant
performance at the net with 5 ½ blocks.
Next up for the Eagles is a Saturday afternoon battle against No.
2-ranked Juniata College at 1:00 p.m. before closing out the
tournament with a 3:30 bout against host Washington & Lee.
