The Emory University volleyball team, ranked No. 2 in the
nation, came away with a pair of wins on Friday at the Emory
Quadrangle. The Eagles opened the day with a decisive 3-0
triumph over LaGrange College before earning a hard-fought 3-1
victory against Maryville College. The two wins increased
Emory's record to 10-2.
In the match against the Panthers of LaGrange, freshman Breanah
Bourque led an effective offensive attack with 13 kills while
registering a pair of service aces. Junior Allison Sharp
totaled nine terminations and finished with a 57.1 hitting
percentage (9-1-14). Sophomore Kelsey Freeman and freshman
Alena Ransom each contributed seven kills apiece. Freshman
setter Emily Reiser dished out 24 assists in the first two games
before Erika Davies chalked up 12 in the third set. For
the match, Emory recorded an impressive 46.7 attack percentage
(43-8-75).
In the nightcap against Maryville, Emory displayed a balanced
hitting attack with three players coming through with double
figures in kills. Sophomore Alexandra Wright turned in
an outstanding 66.7 attack percentage on the strength of 12
put-ways with no errors in 18 attempts. Sophomore Jessica
McAlvany and freshman Alex Duhl played key roles with 11
terminations apiece with McAlvany hitting 47.6 percent (11-1-21)
and Duhl 55.6 percent (11-1-18). Sophomore Natalie Schonefeld
recorded 40 assists and senior Vista Murphy chalked up 10
digs. The Eagles hit 35.2 percent (52-9-122) as a team with
Maryville finishing with a 29.3 percent (51-17-116) effort.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 22) when it hosts
Alabama-Huntsville at 6:00 p.m.
