The No. 1-ranked Emory University volleyball team opened the 2009
season on a successful note this evening with a victory over West
Georgia. The Eagles posted a 3-0 triumph (25-14, 25-18,
25-18) over the Wolves who saw their record slip to 3-2.
The Eagles received a pair of fine performances from a pair of
newcomers, sophomore Jess McAlvany and freshman Alena Ransom.
The duo combined for 18 of the team's 38 kills with McAlvany tying
for match honors with 10 terminations and Ransom totaling
eight. McAlvany finished the contest with a match-high 36.8
hitting percentage (10-3-19) while Ransom closed out the night with
a 29.4 attack percentage (8-3-17).
For the match, Emory turned in a hitting percentage of 25.5 percent
while holding West Georgia to .045 percent. The Eagles held a
49-42 edge in digs, with sophomore Brannan O'Neill leading in that
department with 13, and dished out a total of 10 service aces vs.
six for the Wolves.
Junior Amelia McCall chipped in nine terminations and six digs to
aid in the cause while senior Vista Murphy helped with the
defensive effort with 12 digs.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Sept. 4) when it hosts a pair of
matches on the initial day of the Emory Classic with the Eagles
meeting Maryville (Mo.) in a 4:30 p.m. bout before taking on
UW-Platteville at 7:30 p.m.
