The Emory volleyball team, fresh off its University Athletic
Association Championships performance, has been chosen as a host
site for regional action of the 2010 NCAA Division III
Tournament. It marks the first time since 2005 that the
school will serve as a host.
Action begins on Friday (Nov. 12) with four first-round matches
with the second rounds being played on Saturday. The regional
championship will be played on Sunday (Nov. 14) with the winner
advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinal round of the championships in
St. Louis. Times will be announced later.
The Eagles of head coach Jenny McDowell, 31-4 on the year,
earned an automatic bid following its league title this past
weekend, and will battle the Lions of Piedmont College in a
first-round match. Piedmont, coached by Sid Feldman, earned
an automatic slot to the tourney after capturing the Great South
Athletic Conference championship this past weekend. The
winner of the Emory-Piedmont affair will advance to the
second round to play the victor of the Washington & Lee (27-6)
vs. Mount St. Joseph (22-10) contest. The Generals of
Washington & Lee were runners-up at the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference championship this past weekend while the Lions brought
home the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
Other first-round match-ups include Southwestern University (31-6)
of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference against Thomas More
(28-7), the champs of the President’s Athletic
Conference. The winner of the Saints vs. Pirates clash
advances to Saturday’s second where they will confront either
Cal-Lutheran (27-3), champs of the Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference or Hardin-Simons (21-7), who is
coming off a title performance at the American Southwester
Conference Tournament.
