No. 3 Emory Volleyball Heads To UAA Round Robin II

MATCH FACTS – – The Emory volleyball team continues its season this Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 15-16) when it competes at the University Athletic Association Round Robin II.  Serving as the host of this weekend's action will be the University of Rochester.

The Eagles' first match will be against New York University at 12:30 pm on Saturday.  Emory will close out its initial day of action with a 2:30 pm bout against Carnegie Mellon.  On Sunday, the team will battle Brandeis in a 10:00 am start before winding up the weekend with an encounter against Washington University at 2:00 pm.

THE COACHES – Emory Head Coach Jenny McDowell (Georgia, '89) is in her 16th year at the helm of the Eagles' program.  During her stint at Emory, McDowell has posted a school and career won-lost ledger of 500-125.  She achieved her 500th victory on Oct. 8, 2011, when Emory topped Maryville College, 3-0.  She has 12 campaigns of 30 or more wins, including last year's school-record setting 36-5 record, and has directed the program to 15 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.  She has steered the Eagles to three berths to the national semifinals and has a national championship to her credit in 2008.

In her first year at the helm of the NYU program is Jolie Ward (Stony Brook, 1997).  Prior to her current post, she spent two years as the head coach at Princeton where she compiled a 24-26 won-lost slate.  In 14 campaigns as a head coach, Ward heads into the upcoming weekend with a career effort of 239-196.

Kim Kelly (Gettysburg, 1992) in is her seventh year as the head coach at Carnegie Mellon.  During her tenure with the Tartans, she has manufactured a school mark of 129-108.  Now in her 16th season as a head coach, Kelly claims a career ledger of 379-190.

The 2011 season represents Michelle Kim's (SUNY-Binghamton, 1996) eighth in directing the fortunes at Brandeis.   Kim owns a school and career won-lost performance of 139-128.

The venerable Rich Luenemann (Eastern Illinois, 1972) is in his 13th season in patrolling the sidelines for Washington University and he sports a school record of 436-56 heading into the UAA Round Robin II.  Luenemann, who has guided the Bears to three national crowns, is in his 24th year as a head coach and has manufactured a career ledger of 1,026-318.

2011 RECORDS – Emory, ranked No. 3 in the nation in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, takes an overall mark of 24-2 (3-0 UAA) into this weekend's action.  On Monday, the Eagles saw their school-record tying 23-match win streak come to an end when it came out on the short end of a 3-0 decision to Lee University.  Over the weekend, the team swept through the Emory National Tournament with a 4-0 record, defeating Piedmont College and Ohio Northern on Friday before bettering Lynchburg College and Maryville on Saturday.

The Violets of NYU stand 14-8 in overall action (1-2 UAA) and are coming off a 3-1 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology.

Carnegie Mellon claims a 12-7 record, including a 2-1 effort in UAA matches.   The Tartans last played the weekend of Oct. 1-2 at the UAA Round Robin I, losing to Wash U. before defeating NYU and Brandeis.

Brandeis comes into the Round Robin II looking to shake off a nine-match losing streak that has dropped its overall record to 7-11 (0-3 UAA).  The Judges' last action was on Oct. 6 when

 they dropped a 3-0 verdict to Emerson.

The Bears of Wash U., ranked No. 2 in the AVCA Top 25 Poll, have raced out to a 21-0 record.  It has not dropped a set in any of its matches and has established a D-III record by capturing 63 sets in a row. 

SERIES RECORDS  – Emory has captured the last 11 meetings against NYU and owns an all-time mark of 28-13 against the Violets.

Emory has claimed 25 of the 35 meetings against Carnegie Mellon. 

Emory stands 32-6 all-time against Brandeis University.

Washington University has won 46 of 52 matches against Emory, however the teams have split the last 10 encounters.

EAGLES QUARTET SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains for the 2011 Eagles will be seniors Natalie Schonefeld, Amelia McCall and Kelsey Freeman (Orinda, CA) and junior Breanah Bourque.

McCALL NAMED D3VB.ORG PLAYER OF THE WEEKAmelia McCall was named the Player of the Week by D3VB.org after earning MVP honors and helping the team to a 4-0 mark at the Emory National Tournament.   Playing in all the team's 12 sets, the 5-foot-10 McCall averaged a team-high 4.08 kills per set and was second on the squad in digs (2.92 dps).  She led or tied for the team lead in kills in three of the four matches including a 15-terminations effort and .480 attack percentage (15-3—25) against Ohio Northern.  Through 26 matches, she paces the club in kills (4.03 kps) and is second in digs (3.36 dps).

NUMBERS TO WATCH – Emory's 23-match win streak that was snapped at Lee University on Monday tied 1994 squad for the longest in school history … Prior to the setback at Lee, Emory's 24-1 record represented the best mark in school annals after 25 games. … In UAA and NCAA statistics released Oct. 9, Emory ranked No. 2 in the league and 9th on the national scene in attack percentage (.281) … Senior setter Natalie Schonefeld holds down the No. 1 spot among UAA performers and is fifth nationally in assists (11.03 aps) … Schonefeld, who holds the Nos. 3 & 4 spots on Emory seasonal chart for assists has 827 in 2011, good for the 18th position … Emory was No. 2 in the UAA and NCAA in kills per set (14.07 kps) … Breanah Bourque's .846 hitting percentage (12-1—13) against Maryville was her second-highest effort of the campaign … Bourque has hit .400 or higher in eight of her last 10 contests … McCall enters the weekend in 7th place on Emory's career chart with 1,351 kills … Jessica McAlvany went over the 1,000-career kills plateau in the Lee match and has 1,002 career terminations to her credit.
