No. 2 Emory Volleyball To Meet Berry In Road Test

MATCH FACTS – – After coming up with four wins at the UAA Round Robin II last weekend, the No. 2-ranked Emory volleyball ventures to Rome, Ga., for a Friday evening battle against Berry College.  The Cage Athletic and Recreation Center will serve as the venue for the seventh-ever meeting the schools and the match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.  A video stream of the contest will be available with the link for it as follows: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/berryvikings

THE COACHES – Emory Head Coach Jenny McDowell (Georgia, '89) is in her 16th year at the helm of the Eagles' program.  During her stint at Emory, McDowell has posted a school and career won-lost ledger of 504-125.  She achieved her 500th victory on Oct. 8, 2011, when Emory topped Maryville College, 3-0.  She has 12 campaigns of 30 or more wins, including last year's school-record setting 36-5 record, and has directed the program to 15 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.  She has steered the Eagles to three berths to the national semifinals and has a national championship to her credit in 2008.

In her fourth year at the helm of the Berry program is Mika Robinson (Harvard, 1996).  During her tenure with the Vikings, she has compiled a 71-49 won-lost mark.

2011 RECORDS – Emory, ranked No. 2 in the nation in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, takes an overall mark of 28-2 into Friday's action.  The Eagles rattled off four victories at the UAA Round Robin II last weekend in Rochester, NY, topping NYU and Carnegie Mellon, both by 3-0 counts on Saturday, before defeating Brandeis (3-0) and then No. 2-ranked Washington University (3-2) on Sunday.

Berry will host Emory with an overall record of 12-11.  The Vikings hosted Piedmont College on Tuesday and upended the Lions by a 3-0 margin.

SERIES RECORDS  – Emory has captured all six meetings against Berry  including a 3-0 verdict earlier this season (Sept. 24) at the Woodruff PE Center.

EAGLES QUARTET SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains for the 2011 Eagles will be seniors Natalie Schonefeld, Amelia McCall and Kelsey Freeman (Orinda, CA) and junior Breanah Bourque.

McCALL NAMED UAA PLAYER OF THE WEEKAmelia McCall was named the UAA Player of the Week for the second time this season and fourth time in her career following her effort at the league's Round Robin II.  Playing in 11 of the team's 14 sets, she paced the squad with a 4.00 kills-per-set average while registering a .402 attack percentage (44-7—92).  In addition, she ranked second on the club with a 2.91 digs-per-set effort.

NUMBERS TO WATCH – In UAA and NCAA statistics released at the start of the week, the Eagles rank No. 2 in the league and 8th nationally in hitting percentage (.293) …  Emory is No. 2 both in the UAA and among all D-III programs in kills per set (13.9 kps) … The Eagles hit .480 (40-4—75) in the 3-0 triumph against Carnegie Mellon, their second-highest effort of the campaign … Emory's 28-2 record ties the 2000 team for the program's best 30-game record … Junior middle Breanah Bourque is hitting a torrid .455 (284-46—523), good for the No. 1 spot on the UAA ladder and 2nd on the NCAA stat sheet … Bourque has hit .400 or better in her last seven and in 11 of her last 13 matches …  Bourque's attack percentage mark is currently first on the school's all-time seasonal chart … Amelia McCall has double-figure kills in eight of her last nine and a total of 20 matches this year … McCall registered a total of 44 kills in the three matches she played in last weekend and in the process moved into sixth place on the school's all-time chart in that category with 1,395 … In addition, McCall is tied with Katie Wildermuth (2000, '02-04) for 11th place on the Eagles' career ladder with 892 digs … Freshman Leah Jacobs banged out a season-high 12 kills in the Brandeis match while classmate Kate Bowman's 11 terminations marked her fourth double-figure showing in that department this year … Senior Jessica McAlvany stands 13th all-time at Emory with 1,023 kills … McAlvany has doled out 38 service aces this season and is tied for fourth in the UAA in service aces per set (0.44 aps) … Junior Alena Ransom is eighth among UAA spikers in hitting percentage (.318) … Bourque, who is third in the UAA in blocks (0.90 bps), has chalked up 254 total blocks in her career, good for 12th place on the school's all-time ladder … Senior setter Natalie Schonefeld is second in the conference and fifth nationally in assists (11.05 aps) … Sophomore Molly Landers has chalked up 21 matches of double-figure digs and is seventh among UAA performers in that category (3.62 dps).
