Emory Volleyball Well Represented On The All-UAA Team

A total of seven members of the No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team have been chosen to the 2011 All-University Athletic Association Team.  Three players were afforded first-team acclaim, while one was a second-team selection.  Rounding out the team's representatives were three honorable-mention picks. The all-league teams were selected by the conference coaches.  Emory enters the upcoming NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 34-4 and finished the conference with a 9-1 slate following its runner-up effort at the league's championship last weekend.

Senior Natalie Schonefeld (Riviera, TX) highlighted the Eagles' selections by being tabbed as a first-team honoree for the fourth straight year.  The 5-foot-7 setter has doled out 10.91 assists per set, good for the No. 2 spot on the conference ladder and seventh nationally, in helping the squad post a .285 attack percentage, good for sixth place among D-III programs.  The school's all-time leader with 5,622 assists, she has doled out 50 or more assists on five occasions this year and her total of 1,244 currently ranks 11th on the school's seasonal ladder.  She has also helped out defensively, recording 12 matches of double-figure digs while registering a 2.40 digs-per-set average, good for 20th place in the league.  She is the first Emory volleyball player to garner first-team acclaim all four years of her career.

Senior Amelia McCall (Montgomery, AL) landed First Team All-UAA honors for the third straight campaign after racking up a 3.87 kills-per-set average, good for a second-place tie in the UAA and 32nd nationally.  The 5-foot-10 outside hitter has chalked up 25 performances of double-figure kills this season including three of 20 or more, one of which was a career-best 23 terminations in a 3-1 win over No. 5 Eastern University. No. 2 on the club and 11th in the UAA with a 3.05 digs-per-set showing, McCall has come up 14 double-doubles this year and has been chosen as the UAA Player of the Week twice.  Entering this weekend's NCAA Regionals, she holds down the No. 4 position on the school's all-time list with 1,490 kills.

Rounding out the trio of first-team honorees was junior middle Breanah Bourque (Houston, TX).   The 5-foot-11 Bourque paces the team and UAA with a glittering .436 hitting percentage with that mark good for the No. 3 spot nationally.  Fourth in the UAA in kills (3.34 kps), she has hit .400 or higher on 21 occasions this year and produced 20 matches of double-figure terminations.  Her attack percentage currently ranks first on the Eagle's seasonal ladder.  While her offensive numbers have been impressive, she has been a force defensively with her 0.86 blocks-per-set mark ranking sixth in the UAA.  She came up with a season-high tying seven total blocks against NCAA Tournament teams Randolph-Macon (0-7—7) and Maryville (3-4) and registered five or more total blocks in five matches.  It was Bourque's second straight selection to the first team.

After earning first-team honors her first two years with the program, senior outside hitter Jessica McAlvany (Roswell, GA) was chosen to the second team this season.  The 6-foot-1 McAlvany, a member of the Emory Homecoming and Doc Partin Classic All-Tournament teams, has totaled seven matches of 10 or more kills including a season-high 15 against NCAA Tournament member Eastern University.  She has emerged as an important server and tops the club and stands sixth in the UAA with a 0.39 aces-per-set average.  In a 3-2 win over then-No. 16 Chicago, McAlvany finished with 14 kills and four aces.

Emory's honorable-mention choices were juniors Alena Ransom (Tampa, FL) and Alex Duhl (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore Molly Landers (Kentfield, CA).  Ransom, 5-foot-9, has enjoyed a consistent campaign, playing in 105 of the team's 129 sets and registering a .299 hitting percentage, good for 11th place on the UAA chart.  Ransom, who came through with a career-high 13 kills against No. 14 Cal Lutheran, has been a solid presence at the net with a 0.58 blocks-per-set mark. After missing the 2010 campaign rehabbing a shoulder injury, the 6-foot Duhl has bounced back in fine fashion, leading the team and standing fourth in the league in blocks (0.91 bps).  In her most recent outing, she chalked up a career-high 11 blocks (1-10) against Washington University in the UAA title match, tying the fourth-highest match total in school history.  Duhl has been a solid offensive performer as well, posting a .332 hitting percentage that places her sixth in the league.  Landers, 5-foot-5 has been a defensive dynamo with her team-high 3.88 digs-per-set effort ranking seventh among UAA players.  She has played in 128 sets and has 28 outings of double-figure digs including a school match record of 35 against Washington University in the UAA Championships.  Landers' current total of 496 is fourth on the Eagles' seasonal ladder.

Emory opens NCAA Tournament action on Friday (Nov. 12) at the Newport News Regional.  The Eagles' first-round foe will be Richard Stockton with that match beginning at 3:00 p.m.
