Emory Volleyball Sweeps Randolph-Macon In NCAA Second-Round Match

The No. 3-ranked Emory volleyball team continued its run in the NCAA D-III Championships with a second-round victory over Randolph-Macon College at the Newport News Regional.  The Eagles upped their overall record to 36-4 following a 3-0 decision (25-19, 25-15, 25-19) over the Yellow Jackets who ended their year (24-6).  Serving as the host of the regional is Christopher Newport University.

Senior Amelia McCall pounded out a team-high 19 kills to lead the offensive attack and finished the match with a .395 attack percentage (19-4—38).  Thus far in the two matches at the regional, McCall is hitting a solid .367 (27-5—60).  Juniors Breanah Bourque and Alex Duhl were next up on Emory's terminations list with six each.  Senior setter Natalie Schonefeld dished out 34 assists and chipped in eight digs while freshman Cami Silverman led all players with 15 digs. 

Emory ended the match hitting .320 (43-10—103) compared to R-MC's effort of .140 (31-15—114).  The Eagles enjoyed a 55-43 advantage in digs as well.

The Eagles hit .387 (13-1---31) en route to picking up the win in the first set.  Trailing by a 16-15 count, Emory used a 5-0 run, with McCall contributing two kills, to assume a 20-16 advantage.   After a Randolph-Macon side out,  terminations by McCall and McAlvany aided in the Eagles taking command at 24-17. After two points by R-MC, a kill by Duhl closed out the set and gave Emory a 1-0 lead in the match. 

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the second set before Emory battled back to force a 12-12 tie.  The Eagles then took control of things with a 10-0 outburst, with McCall racking up three kills, to bolt to a 22-12 cushion.   A successful put-away by freshman Cami Silverman closed out that set and set the stage for the sweep with the Eagles grinding away for a victory in the third set.

The triumph enabled Emory to tie for the school record for most wins in a season, originally set by the 2010 club.

Emory advances to Sunday's regional championship where it will battle host and No. 6-ranked Christopher Newport (35-4).  The Captains defeated Salisbury in Saturday's second round by a 3-0 margin.
