Emory Volleyball Trio Tabbed As All-Americans

Emory Volleyball Trio Tabbed As All-Americans

A total of three members of the Emory volleyball program have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Team for the 2011 season.

Senior setter Natalie Schonefeld (Riviera, TX) was tabbed as a First Team All-American for the second time in her career after ranking second in the University Athletic Association and eighth nationally with an 11.01 assists-per-set average. Her deft setting skills and decision making helped Emory to a .284 attack percentage, good for the No. 2 position in the UAA and No. 5 nationally.  Schonefeld closed out a stellar career as the school's all-time leader with 5,732 assists and her total of 1,354 this year ranks eighth on the Eagles' seasonal ladder.   She now holds four of the program's top 10-seasonal setting marks.  Schonefeld has been recognized as an All-American in each of her four years – in addition to her 2011 and 2009 first-team berths, she was a second-team pick in 2008 and an honorable-mention pick in 2010.

Junior middle Breanah Bourque (Houston, TX) earned her First Team All-America berth after leading the UAA and ranking third among D-III players with a .427 hitting percentage with that mark ranking first on Emory's seasonal chart.  A Second Team All-American last year, the 5-foot-11 Bourque hit .400 or higher in 23 matches and finished second on the club and fourth in the University Athletic Association with a 3.36 kills-per-set average.  The owner of 22 matches of double-figure kills, her .727 hitting percentage (17-1—22) against Chicago on Oct. 1, tied for the 10th-highest effort in school history.   In addition to her impressive offensive totals, she was second on the team and eighth in the UAA in blocks (0.82 bps).

Rounding out the trio of Emory All-Americans was senior Amelia McCall (Montgomery, AL) who was afforded second-team recognition.  The 5-foot-10 McCall pounded out a league-best 3.94 kills per set, good for the No. 24 spot nationally, and her final total of 489 terminations this season ranks fifth on Emory's seasonal chart.  Named the UAA Player of the Week on three occasions this year, most recently for her effort at the Newport News NCAA Regional, she compiled 27 outings of double-figure kills including three of 20 or more.  She was second on the team and 12th in the league in digs with a 2.98 per-set average and totaled 14 matches of double-doubles (kills/digs).  A three-time member of the All-UAA First Team and league MVP in 2010, McCall finished out her career in the No. 4 position on the school's all-time kills list with 1,534.

Emory closed out 2011 with a won-lost ledger of 36-5, tying the school record for most wins in a season.
