Emory Volleyball Defeats No. 3 Wittenberg

The No. 8-ranked Emory volleyball team continued its impressive run at the Courtyard Marriott Invitational on Saturday morning, earning an impressive victory over host and No. 3-ranked Wittenberg University.  The Eagles upped their record to 2-0 following a 3-1 decision (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23) over the Tigers who slipped to 1-1.

The junior tandem of Cat McGrath (St. Louis, MO) and Leah Jacobs (Linville, VA) sparked the Emory effort with McGrath banging out a career-best 17 kills and registering a  .433 hitting percentage (17-4—30).  In addition, she contributed five block assists and a pair of digs.   Jacobs turned in her second straight career best outing with a match-best 19 terminations (she had 16 last evening vs. St. Thomas) and finished with a .295 hitting performance (19-6—4).  Freshman Sarah Maher (Orange, CA) rounded out the squad's double-digit terminators with 10 successful attack attempts with just one miscue in 16 opportunities en route to a match-high .562 hitting effort.

Sophomore setter Sydney Miles (Oklahoma City, OK) dished out 47 assists and chipped in 11 digs while sophomore Taylor Erwin (Woodlands, TX) topped all players with 21 digs. 

Emory concluded the contest with an edge in hitting percentage, recording a .222 effort (62-25—167) compared to the host Tigers' .184 showing (48-19—158).  The Eagles held a 79-68 edge in digs while both teams totaled nine total blocks.

Emory will play its final match of the weekend against Johns Hopkins in a scheduled 12:30 p.m. start.
