The No. 8 Emory volleyball team remained undefeated on Saturday after battling to a pair of hard-fought wins on the final day of the Randolph-Macon Invitational. The Eagles upped their season record to 7-0 following a 3-1 (25-22, 27-25, 28-30, 25-14) verdict against Trinity university and a 3-2 come-from-behind triumph (23-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 15-10) against host Randolph-Macon.
Emory hit .263 (73-22--194) against Trinity while the Tigers finished with a .207 (52-16--174) effort. Junior Kate Bowman led all players with a career-high 19 kills while contributing 12 digs. Junior Cat McGrath pounded out 16 terminations, her second-highest career total, and hit a solid .344 (16-5--320. Junior Leah Jacobs and freshman Jessica Holler rounded out the team's top attackers with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Sophomore Sydney Miles aided in the victory with her career-high 62 assists ranking 10th on the Eagles' single-game list. Sophomore Taylor Erwin led all players with 27 digs in helping Emory to a 98-83 edge in that department. Emory's final digs total tied for the No. 12 spot on the school's single-match chart.
Facing a 2-1 deficit after three sets in the Randolph-Macon match, Emory rose to the challenge over the final two games and held the Yellow Jackets to a -.033 hitting percentage. McGrath registered a team-high 12 kills and turned in a solid hitting percentage of .476 (12-2--21). McGrath also chipped in six blocks assists. Jacobs accounted for 11 successful put-aways while Holler rang up 10 kills and five (2-3) total blocks. Miles doled out 41 assists and Erwin totaled a season-high 28 digs, her third-highest career total.
The Eagles make their season home debut next Friday and Saturday (Sept. 13-14) when they host the Emory Classic. On the opening day of play, Emory will host Millsaps at 3:00 p.m., and No. 5 Christopher Newport at 8:00 p.m.
