Volleyball Defeats Sewanee in Straight Sets

Volleyball Defeats Sewanee in Straight Sets

The No. 7 ranked Emory University volleyball team won its tenth game of the season Saturday evening, sweeping regional foe Sewanee at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

In the first of three straight against Southern Athletic Association opponents, the Eagles took care of business over the Tigers 25-8, 25-22, 25-20. Emory now stands 10-4 overall while the Tigers slipped to 7-12.

Sophomore Alana Dawson paced the Eagles attack with 14 kills as she was one of five players that combined for 51 of the team's 52 kills in the win. Sophomore Madison Cail, in her second game back from injury, reached double digits with 10 kills while the trio of juniors Carly Wallace, Amanda Meyer and sophomore Lily Martin all tallied nine terminations. Emory as a team hit .343 (52-16—105), the second highest total of the year and best since the season opener against LaGrange on September 1.

The Eagles never trailed in two of the three sets on Saturday including a 17-point margin to lead things off in the first. Sewanee responded to open the second, leading by as many as five at 14-9 before the Eagles went on an 8-2 run out of timeout to take the lead at 17-16, thanks in large part to four kills by Martin and the serving prowess of sophomore Deborah Hong and senior Caitlyn Reynolds. The Tigers answered with three straight and five of eight to go in front 21-20 before the Eagles regrouped to close out the set with five of six points with Dawson and Meyer combined for four of the clinching kills.

Emory continued the momentum in the third, winning four straight out of the break and seven of the first nine as they never trailed in the set. The Eagles led by as many as six in the final set and never saw the Tigers get as close as two points the remainder of the match.

Another top-10 matchup is on tap for the Eagles this Tuesday as they will travel to Rome, Georgia to battle No. 5 ranked Berry College at 7:00 PM.
