Volleyball Close Emory Classic Tournament with Emphatic Win Over Wooster

The Emory University volleyball team closed out the Emory Classic Tournament in emphatic fashion defeating Wooster in a straight set demolition. The Eagles moved to 15-6 overall on the season with today's win.

The No. 11 ranked Eagles took down the Wooster Fighting Scots in a convincing 25-6, 25-19, 25-21 rout. The Eagles led the Fighting Scots in every conceivable statistic out-hitting them .286 to .060 while also pouring in 14 blocks to Wooster's six.

Freshman Kaya Monrose was a force at the net as she posted a team-high 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage (11-2--18) while also contributing three blocks. Sophomore Sarah Luong continued to be a guiding force for the Eagles notching 31 assists while also leading the team in digs with 15. Junior Amanda Meyer has turned herself into a problem for the Eagle's opponents at the net as she registered an impressive five blocks while also notching six kills of her own. Sophomore Lily Martin was one of three Eagles with a .500 hitting percentage or better as she poured in an additional seven kills for a dominant Emory attack.

The Eagles came out on a mission, quickly opening up an 8-1 lead on the back of three kills from Martin as the Wooster defenders simply could not contain the Emory offensive. A 6-0 run to close the first set, highlighted by an impressive service run from junior Carly Wallace, helped the Eagles to earn their largest margin of victory in a set this season winning 25-6. The second set started with more of the same as sophomore Madison Cail knocked in two service aces to help give Emory an early 6-2 lead. The Fighting Scots continued to battle but the Eagles would open up a 24-16 lead eventually taking home the set 25-19.

The third set was the most competitive of the day but it would not start that way. Emory began the set up 11-1 including a 10-0 run with Monrose contributing four of the terminations herself. The Fighting Scots lived up to their namesake as they continued to fight bringing the score all the way back to within two late in the set but it proved to be too little too late as the Eagles would go on to win 25-21 with the match sealing point coming on one final kill from Monrose.

The Eagles are back in action next weekend as the play host to another tournament, this time the Emory Invitational Tournament with the first match set to get underway at 7:00 PM on Friday against Birmingham-Southern.
