Volleyball Dominates Cal Lutheran, 3-0, in East-West Classic Opener

The Emory University volleyball team came out strong in its first match of the annual East-West Classic defeating the Cal Lutheran Regals 3-0 in Claremont, California.

The No. 12 ranked Eagles took the match winning 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 in just over an hour. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season after cruising through the Jenny McDowell tournament last weekend on their home court.

Senior Carly Wallace led the team with nine kills with fellow senior Amanda Meyer following right behind with eight. Meyer also posted four solo blocks during the match while getting help from junior Madison Cail who had two. Junior Deborah Hong continued to show her strong libero power notching 18 digs placing her season total at 42 and her career total at 715.

The first set started with a 3-3 tie before the Eagles went on a six-point run to take a 9-3 lead at the first timeout. Emory continued the momentum scoring six more points against Cal Lutheran while allowing just three points during that run. Capitalizing on four more attack errors, the Eagles took the first set and looked to the second.

The second set looked to be a little closer with the Eagles holding a 9-7 lead before going on a scoring run taking a 13-8 advantage into the first timeout of the set. Emory once again took advantage of six attack errors at the end of the set with the help of blocks from sophomore Kaya Monrose and Cail to take set two.

The Eagles dominated their way through the last set highlighted by six kills from Wallace and three from junior Alana Dawson and finished 25-15 to take the match.

The Eagles will return to the court on Saturday, September 9 to face No. 17 Tufts University at 6 pm EST and Colorado College at 9 pm EST in Claremont, California.
