The Emory University volleyball team finished the East-West Classic unbeaten after taking down both the Tufts Jumbos and the Colorado College Tigers on Saturday night in Claremont, California.
The No. 12 ranked Eagles now hold a 6-0 record winning their first match of the day against No. 17 ranked Tufts 25-20, 21-25, 25-12, 25-16 before going on to beat Colorado College in four sets with a line of 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21.
Senior Amanda Meyer continued to make a name for herself notching 22 kills on the day, 12 in match one, which ties for the second most in her career, and 10 in the second match. Junior Madison Cail followed closely behind with 20 kills, 10 coming from each match. It proved to be a day for kills with junior Lily Martin also recording 19 kills on the day. Junior Deborah Hong posted 26 digs against Colorado College, the third best of her career.
In the first game against Tufts, the Eagles started strong opening with an 11-6 lead in the first set before the first timeout. The Jumbos looked for a comeback but kills from Meyer and Dawson were able to secure set one for the Eagles. The second set proved to be a close match with the Jumbos taking an 11-5 lead before Emory went on a five-point run highlighted by three attack errors from Tufts. The Jumbos continued their run but not without fight from the Eagles but the effort fell short and Tufts took the second set.
Emory wouldn't stop its momentum starting the third set with a 15-8 lead at the first timeout. They were once again able to take advantage of three attack errors at the end of the match to take the third set 25-12. The fourth set was another back and forth battle with the set constantly standing in a tie between the teams. The Eagles were able to finish strong highlighted by more attack errors from the Jumbos and kills from Martin
The second match against Colorado College also went four sets before the Eagles took the last two sets to clinch the match. The first set was a close matchup with the Eagles holding a 17-12 lead at the first timeout before taking the match on a kill from Cail. In the second set, Emory was playing catch up trying to mount a comeback but the Tigers were able to take the set.
In Emory fashion, the Eagles performed strong in the third set going on a five-point run to take a 13-5 lead over the Tigers at the start of the set. Meyer recorded four kills to secure the set win. The fourth set was another back and forth matchup with a 15-15 tie in the middle of the set before kills from senior Carly Wallace and Meyer ended the match.
On Sunday afternoon, Hong and Meyer were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts this weekend.
The Eagles will be back in action in Atlanta on Friday, September 15 to face Oglethorpe at 6 pm.
