The Emory women's cross country team closed out the 2011 season on Saturday with a 24th-place finish out of 32 teams at the NCAA D-III Championships. The meet was held at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis., and hosted by UW-Oshkosh.
The Eagles totaled 516 points and were led by senior Tess Gallegos who covered the 6k course in a time of 22:02, good for 42nd place overall out of 277 runners. Taking home the team championship was Washington University with a score of 70 points. Middlebury finished runner-up with 111 points while Williams claimed third with 153 points. Claremont-Mudd Scripps (223 pts.) and MIT (276 pts.) rounded out the top five finishers.
Emory senior Sara Gelb crossed the finish line in 103rd place with an effort of 22:34 while freshman Tamara Surtees was close behind at 22:37, placing her 109th. Also scoring for the Eagles were junior Melanie Frank (22:45, 127th) and senior Sabrina Jeppson (22:54, 135th). Other competitors for Emory included freshmen Stephanie Crane (23:26) and Shannon Palmer (24:11).
The top individual finisher was Chiara Del Piccolo of Williams who clocked a 20:52. Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh was runner-up with a time of 20:57.
