The Emory women's cross country team took home first place and
the men runner-up honors at the Sewanee Invitational.
The women's side, ranked 33rd nationally, totaled 27 points, just
ahead of Centre College's 32 points. Birmingham Southern was
third with 104 points. Emory claimed three of the top four
individual finishers in the 88-runner field, led
by junior Tamara Surtees who crossed the finish line in
the No. 1 position with a 6k time of 24:25. Senior Emily
Caesar was the next Eagle to score with her time of 24:33 good for
third place. Junior Marissa Gogniat was third among
the Emory pack, clocking a 24:45, while freshman Michelle Kagei
(25:21, 9th) and junior Elise Vioxx (25:22, 10th) rounded out the
team's scorers.
Emory registered 50 points in the men's race, second to Centre
College's top mark of 20 points. Berry College held down third
place (66 pts.) while Birmingham Southern was fourth (112 pts.). On
an individual basis, the Eagles finished in the 8-through-12
positions, headed by senior Eddie Mulder who recorded a ninth-place
effort in the 93-runner field with an 8k performance of
28:31.6. Freshman Michael McBane (28:31.8) was ninth and
junior Tyler Cooke turned in a showing of 28:32. Rounding out
the scorers were junior Cameron Wheeler (28:32.3) and senior Alex
Fleischhacker (28:32.5).
