Emory Women's Cross Country Announces 2014 Award Winners

The Emory University women's cross country team has announced the program's award winners for the 2014 season.

Senior Tamara Surtees (Chagrin Falls, OH) was named the Most Outstanding Performer for the second straight year after registering a banner campaign that culminated with a 34th-place finish at the NCAA D-III Championships, enabling her to become the Eagles' first All-American since 2006.   The team's top runner in the final seven races of the year, Surtees was a First Team All-University Athletic Association performer after posting a fifth-place finish at the conference championships with a personal-best 6K mark of 22:02 that tied the program's fourth-best all-time outing.  Surtees raced to all-region acclaim for the fourth straight year, crossing the finish line in the No. 4 position out of 205 runners at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships. 

Senior Elise Viox (St. Louis, MO) received the Coaches' Award, symbolic of dedication, leadership and inspiration. Viox ranked among the squad's top-five finishers in six of the team's eight  competitions and  brought home all-region honors for the second consecutive year by virtue of her 19th-place finish (out of 205 runners) at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships, clocking a personal-best 6K time of 23:10.  She helped the Eagles to first-place finishes at the Gulf Coast Stampede and JSU Foothills Invitational, crossing the finish line in the Nos. 6 and 5 positions, respectively, in those events.

Junior Julie Williamson (Chatham, NJ) was chosen as the Most Improved Runner.  Williamson raced in six of Emory's eight competitions and registered personal bests in the 5K (JSU Foothills Invitational) and 6K (UAA Championships) during the course of the year.

Freshman Halle Markel (Chagrin Falls, OH) earned the Most Outstanding Newcomer Award after scoring in six of her seven races.  Markel was exceptional at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships, clocking a season-best 6K time en route to a 13th-place finish that enabled her to claim all-region accolades.  She was the squad's No. 3 finisher at the UAA Championships and was the No. 10 overall competitor at the Gulf Coast Stampede.

The Emory women's cross country team finished first at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships and made its 10th consecutive appearance at the national championships this past year.
