Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Both Finish Fourth at UAA Championships; Two Eagles Receive All-UAA Honors

The Emory men's and women's cross country teams competed in the UAA Championships at the Squire Valleevue Farm Course in Hunting Valley, Ohio on Saturday morning. Both the men's and women's teams raced to fourth place finishes, compiling 109 and 95 points, respectively. Graduate student Brigid Hanley stole the show for the Eagles once again, finishing third overall and earning First Team All-UAA honors.

After transferring from the University of Arizona, Hanley has been dominant in her first season with Emory. She has been the first Eagle to cross the finish line in all five of her races this fall. Hanley finished just 12 seconds behind the winner, crossing the finish line in third with a time of 21:46.0.

Also earning All-UAA honors was junior Liesl Scherrer, who finished 10th overall to land on the conference's Second Team. Scherrer trotted in at 22:28.0, the second Eagle to finish in the race.

The Eagles also received strong performances from a pair of freshmen, with Madison Tiaffay and Cameron Gupta both finishing in the top-30 of the 74-person field. Tiaffay finished in 25th at 23:16.5 and Gupta finished in 29th at 23:25.4.

Also finishing in the top half of runners on the women's side was senior Lily Taylor finishing in 30th at 23:25.7, junior Elle Haushalter in 31st at 23:29.3, and junior Natalie Sandlow in 23:33.9. Rounding out the times for the Eagles was sophomore Katherine Kennedy in 41st at 23:52.1 and freshman Payton Fleming in 59th at 25:12.2.

On the men's side, the top finisher was senior Scott Masterson, racing to a 15th place finish. The senior narrowly missed out on All-UAA honors, finishing just .6 seconds behind the 14th place finisher. Masterson's official time came to 25:42.7.

The Eagles had five more runners finish in the top half of the 77-person field with junior Marcus Cheema in 17th at 25:47.5, junior David Evans in 25th at 26:02.5, senior Tristan Olpin in 29th at 26:13.3, junior Jonathan Orelowitz in 30th at 26:14.2, and freshman Olin Gilster in 34th at 26:19.8.

Finishing off the times for Emory was freshman Kirin Karver in 44th at 26:40.2, sophomore Matthew McClure in 52nd at 26:47.6, sophomore Nikhil Makker in 57th at 27:08.2, and freshman Ezra Shilling-Rabin in 60th at 27:19.8.

The cross country teams will have next weekend off to prepare for the NCAA South Region Championships. The event will take place at the Clara Bowl in Rome, Georgia on Saturday, November 11th.
