York Stuns Emory with 11-10 Extra-Inning Win

The Emory University baseball team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Saturday at the Rawlings Southern Classic, as York College overcame an eight-run deficit to beat the Eagles in ten innings, 11-10.

Emory sophomore Ben Hinojosa gave the Eagles a strong start, allowing just one run on four hits and four walks through six innings.

However, York knotted the game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs off the combination of Emory's Dylan Finer and Mike Bitanga to tie the game.

It appeared that Emory would avoid disaster, taking a one-run lead in the top of the ninth on Brett Lake's two-out RBI single that scored pinch runner Brendan McElhaney.  With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and a runner on second base, York's Andrew Hershey hit a routine ground ball to shortstop that was fielded by senior Kevin O'Connor.  However, first baseman Jonathan Sholar dropped the throw, and Steve Tretter scored the game-tying run on the play.

In the bottom of the 10th, senior Connor McGuiness walked the bases loaded with two outs, and missed with a 3-2 pitch to Tretter to score the game-winning run.

McGuiness dropped to 0-1 on the season with the loss, while Josh Kohn earned the win for York, improving to 1-0, and raising his team's record to 1-1.

The Eagles, now 5-3 on the season, will return to action tomorrow, wrapping up the Rawlings Southern Classic with a 12:00 PM game against Millsaps College.
