Baseball Opens Series with Piedmont with 8-3 Setback

The Piedmont College Lions scored eight unanswered runs to come back from an early deficit and defeat the Emory University Eagles 8-3 on Thursday night in Demorest, Georgia.

Emory dropped to 24-12 with the loss, while the Lions raised their season ledger to 23-15.

The Eagles opened up a 3-0 lead in the game after two and a half innings, scoring a single run in each of the first three frames.  In the first, senior Wes Peacock led the game off with a hit by pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout from senior Brett Lake.  A Nick Chambers groundout scored Philip Maldari in the second, and Ben Vizvary drove in a run with a base hit in the third.

However, the Lions tied the game with a three-run third inning, and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth.  Piedmont added on three more in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Sophomore Hans Hansen allowed five runs (three earned) in four innings to take the loss and fall to 3-2 for the season.

The Eagles and the Lions will be back in action on Friday, with the series returning to Atlanta, Georgia.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm, with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony, honoring Emory's six graduating players, scheduled for before the game.
