Five-Run First Propels Emory Baseball to 6-1 Win

A five-run first inning and dominant pitching performance on the mound by junior Jackson Weeg helped the Emory University baseball team improve to 4-2 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Ferrum College Panthers.

The Eagles saw the first seven batters reach base as Emory jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Two runners scored as junior Wilson Morgan grounded into a fielder's choice and the third baseman's throw sailed into right field. Scoring on the play was senior David Coble who led off with a walk and senior Dylan Eisner who singled through the left side. Later in the frame, senior Ben Vizvary singled to left with the bases loaded to plate junior Brian Hernandez. Junior Chris Young reached on an error in the next at bat for the Eagles which allowed junior Philip Maldari to score from third.

An inning later, Emory tacked on another run as Maldari grounded out to second to bring home Eisner.

Weeg had all his pitches working in this one, working seven superb innings of one run ball to improve to 2-0 on the season. Weeg tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts, eight of which came over the course of the final 12 outs. The Woodstock, GA native retired the first seven hitters he faced in the game and closed out his outing retiring 12 of the final 13 batters.

Emory and Ferrum will close out their three game series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The first game is set to begin at 11:00 AM with the second game to follow at 2:00 PM. No game will be played on Sunday due to the potential inclement weather.
