#3 Eagles Drop Heartbreaker to WashU in 10 Innings, 3-2

The no.3-ranked Emory University baseball team fell to 3-3 in UAA play and 13-5 overall falling in a heartbreaker, 3-2 in 10 innings, to first place Washington University on Friday afternoon at Sanford Memorial Stadium on day six of the 2016 UAA Baseball Championships.

Senior Chris Young gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead in the top half of the 10th inning with a double to the right field gap to score junior Cody Wetmore from third. Wetmore led off the frame with a walk before advancing to second on a sac bunt and then stealing third with one out.

In the bottom of the 10th, junior Kyle Monk sent down two of the first three batters he faced in the inning and got to a 0-2 count on Christian Santos. In the ninth inning, Monk provided Emory with some late game heroics to send the contest into extra innings. Eisner made the first out in the inning, fielding a tough grounder and throwing home to get the lead runner by a step and a half. The senior then made an absolute circus catch on a pop out that got caught in the wind for the second out in the frame. Monk finished the inning with big time strikeout of Tate Maider in a seven pitch at bat.

The ballgame featured a terrific pitching matchup between Weeg and Bears starter Julian Clarke. Weeg worked 8+ innings, giving up one run on six hits to along with four walks and three strikeouts. Clarke pitched into the 10th inning, finishing with a line of two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two free passes.
