Covenant Plates Two Late to Upend #4 Eagles

The fourth-ranked Emory University baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Covenant College on Friday afternoon to fall to 15-6 on the year. With the win, the Scots improved to 11-11.

Down one run in the bottom of the eighth, Covenant rallied for two runs off junior Kyle Monk to take a 4-3 lead. Closer Alex Kerr came on in relief of starter Garrett Kriston to record a clean ninth inning to hand the Eagles the one run loss.

Junior RHP Jackson Weeg, fresh off his All-UAA Tournament Team honors, pitched seven strong innings for the Eagles. Weeg allowed two runs (1 ER) on just four hits with seven strikeouts. Monk suffered his third loss on the year, giving up two runs in the eighth on three hits to fall to 0-3.

Junior Wilson Morgan began the scoring in the fourth, breaking a scoreless tie with his first career home run. The Scots however answered in the bottom of the frame, pushing across an unearned run on a wild pitch by Weeg.

Emory scored twice more in the fifth to move in front 3-1 with a two-run double by senior Chris Slivka that scored sophomore Nick Chambers and junior Philip Maldari. Covenant cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth with a Perry Rigby round tripper to left.

In the eighth inning after a Taylor Bloye sac fly to tie the game at 3-3, Ryan Gosney had a two-out single to center to plate the eventual winning run.

Emory and Covenant will finish their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Chappell Park. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
