Eagles Dominant in 4-0 Win over Spalding

Eagles Dominant in 4-0 Win over Spalding

The Emory University men's soccer team put together its most complete effort of the young 2012 season, earning its second-straight win on Friday with a 4-0 victory over Spalding University in the opening game of the 23rd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted by Centre College in Danville, KY.

The win brings Emory's record to 2-1-1 on the season, while Spalding took its first loss of the campaign, dropping to 2-1-0 in 2012.

Emory got off to a quick start in the game, thanks to sophomore forward Dylan Price, who scored his third goal in the last two games.  Price, who leads all Eagles with three goals and seven points this season, struck just six minutes and 38 seconds after the opening whistle to put Emory on top.  Junior Nolan McKeever picked up his first assist of the season on the play.

The Eagles would continue to pressure Spalding both offensively and defensively in the first frame, taking the first six shots of the game, three of which were on goal.  After a pair of shots on goal by Spalding's Stephen Hubert in the 24th minute that were saved by Emory keeper Aram Keteyian, Emory rallied off another seven unanswered shots before junior Andrew Jones was able to find the back of the net in the 38th minute, off an assist from freshman TJ Atchison.  The goal, his first of the season, extended the Eagles' lead to 2-0.

The Eagles would end the first half with a 16-3 advantage in shots over Spalding, and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.  Emory managed to set up five first-half corner kicks, while holding the Golden Eagles without one.

Emory wasted little time cushioning its lead in the second half, as freshman Matt Sherr struck for his team-leading second goal of the season in the 52nd minute, with help from an assist Connor Curtin, pushing the Eagles' advantage to 3-0.  In the 80th minute, sophomore Zachary Rosenberg claimed his first goal of the season, scoring unassisted to give Emory a 4-0 lead.

Emory finished the game with 30 shots, 11 of which were on goal, and nine corner kicks.  Meanwhile, the Eagles defense was stingy throughout the contest, limiting Spalding to six shot (three on goal) for the team's first shutout of the season.  Keteyian played the first 74 minutes and 51 seconds in goal, making three saves, while freshman keeper Abe Hannigan made his collegiate debut, finishing out the shutout for Emory.

The Eagles will wrap up play at the Bob Allen Nissan Classic on Saturday at 6:00 PM against host school Centre College.

Emory Notes
The four-goal margin of victory was Emory's largest since September 16th, 2011, when the Eagles beat Virginia Wesleyan College 5-0 at home… It was the Eagles' largest margin of victory away from the Woodruff P.E. Center since a 7-0 win over Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC on September 18th, 2010.
