Credle's Golden Goal Seals Emory Upset over #23 Chicago

Credle's Golden Goal Seals Emory Upset over #23 Chicago

Emory University sophomore Carl Credle headed in a ball with just 26 seconds left in the second overtime period against the 23rd-ranked University of Chicago, securing a 4-3 win for the Eagles in a wild affair at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday afternoon.

The first contest of the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) saw the Eagles score three unanswered goals to start the second half, after a scoreless first frame.  However, Chicago battled back with three scores of its own, including the game-tying goal with just 1:06 left in regulation to force overtime.

After a both teams battled through a scoreless 19 minutes and 30 seconds of overtime, a long throw in from Emory's Jeffrey Cochran went into the box, where sophomore Dylan Price flicked it to Credle, who was able to send one past the Chicago keeper for his third goal of the season, and first career 'golden goal.'

With the victory, the team's fourth in a row, the Eagles improved to 6-4-1 on the season, including a 1-0-0 record in UAA action.  Chicago dropped to 5-2-2 on the season, and to 0-1-0 in conference play

Defense was the story of the first half of the game, with neither team's backline allowing a shot on goal during the frame.  Emory totaled six first half shots, while limiting Chicago to just two.

The theme of the game would change rapidly from defense to offense in the second half.  Price opened the half with his ninth goal of the season in the 49th minute, set up perfectly by senior co-captain David Langton, who made a pass into the box while on the ground.  In the 63rd minute, junior Andrew Jones made a long run, stopping short of the 18-yard box before launching a line drive into the net for his second goal of the year.  Just over four minutes later, Jones would set up the Eagles' third goal of the game, sending a long pass to senior co-captain Andrew Natalino, who was able to score his ninth of the season, tying Price for the team lead.

One minute after the Eagles grabbed a 3-0 lead, the Maroons would begin to claw their way back into the game, starting with a goal in the 68th minute, as Alexis Onfroy headed in a free kick from Nick Codispoti.  In the 76th minute, Jorge Bilbao converted a penalty kick to make it 3-2, follow a handball call in the box against Emory.  With time running out in regulation, Kyle Kurfist scored the equalizer, his second of the season, sneaking a ball along the end line and past Emory goalkeeper Abe Hannigan.

After a quiet first overtime period, both teams became more aggressive in the final 10 minutes of extra time, with Emory launching six shots, and Chicago two.  Both teams had chances, beginning with an Emory breakaway in the 101st minute that resulted in a Credle shot and a save by Chicago keeper Brett Wiesen.  The Maroons would draw a foul outside the Eagles 18-yard box setting up an advantageous free kick in the 102nd minute, but the resulting shot from Michael Choquette went wide.  In the 105th minute, a Matt Sherr kick into the six-yard box was headed towards the goal by Price, but clanged off the post.  Finally, in the 109th minute, a free kick by Natalino from outside the 18-yard box went just wide of the net.  However, Credle would finish off the game with the goal in the closing seconds.

Emory finished the game with a 19-13 edge in shots over Chicago, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Eagles will continue their conference schedule next weekend, as Emory will travel to St. Louis, MO on Sunday, October 7th for a 2:30 PM ET matchup against Washington University.

Emory Notes
Credle's 'golden goal' was the first this season by an Eagle, and the first by an Emory player since Price scored the overtime game winner against New York University on October 30, 2011… Credle has scored a goal in three of the last four Emory games… Price now leads all Emory players with nine goals and 20 points this season… It was his fourth-straight game with a goal… The game marked the fourth time this season that Natalino and Price have each scored a goal in a contest, and the third time in the last four games.
