Eagles Fall to Wash U. 1-0 on Late Goal

The Emory University men's soccer team saw its four game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as Washington University (Mo.) broke a tie with a goal in the 88th minute to defeat the Eagles 1-0 in St. Louis, Mo.

With the loss, Emory dropped to 6-5-1 on the season, while the Bears improved to 5-4-1.  Both teams are now 1-1-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, and will end the weekend tied for fourth place in the conference standings.

The first half was a defensive battle between the two teams, with Emory holding slight edges in both shots (6-3) and shots on goal (4-1) at the end of the first 45 minutes of play.  The second half featured similar defensive play, and despite the Eagles taking the first seven shots of the period, Emory could not find the back of the net for the goal.

Washington would take just one shot during the period, but the Bears would make it count.  In the 88th minute of play, Jeremy Kirkwood drove past two defenders with the ball and pulled Emory keeper Abe Hannigan off the line to try to stop the attack.  However, Kirkwood was able to place a shot past Hannigan and into the goal for his first score of the season.

Emory would take one more shot in the period, but would be unable to convert it for the equalizer, and the game ended with the Bears winning 1-0.

The Eagles finished the game with a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 6-2 bump in shots on goal.  Emory also took six corner kicks during the game, compared to just two for Washington.

Hannigan made one save in the game, falling to 4-2-0 on the season with the loss.  Wash U. goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson made six saves for the shutout win.

The Eagles will be back in action next weekend, as Emory will return home to face UAA-rival Case Western Reserve University at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Friday, October 12th at 7:30 PM.
