Price Scores ‘Golden Goal’ in Emory’s win over Covenant

Price Scores ‘Golden Goal’ in Emory’s win over Covenant

Emory University sophomore Dylan Price scored the third 'golden goal' of his collegiate career on Friday night, as the Eagles came away with a 4-3 overtime victory over Covenant College in a see-saw affair at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Price's game-winning overtime goal came on a header off a cross from sophomore Jeffrey Cochran at the 96:19 mark in the first overtime period.  The score was the 11th of the season for Price, who now leads all Eagles with 25 points, and is tied for the team lead with 11 goals.

The game-winning goal was the sixth of the season for Price, one shy of the school single-season record set by Dennis Jerkunica in 1992 and Patrick Carver in 2007.  His eight career game-winning goals are tied for the fourth-most in school history, and his three 'golden goals' are the second-most by an Eagle, one shy of the school career record held by John Symbas.

Friday's game was tied on three separate occasions after the initial score of the contest, and featured four different lead changes.  It appeared that the Eagles had taken the lead for good in the 74th minute, when sophomore Michael Rheaume gave the squad a 3-2 advantage on his first collegiate score, as his strike from 25 yards out bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal.  However, with under three minutes left in regulation, the Eagles surrendered the lead when Covenant's Tyler Morrison completed a hat trick, scoring his third goal of the contest on a long run down the far side, before cutting into the box and shooting past the Eagles' keeper for the goal, eventually sending the game into overtime.

The first half featured a flurry of scoring as well, starting with a 13th-minute goal scored by the Scots.  At the 12:23 mark, Covenant's Noah Wiersema sent a low cross into the six-yard box that Emory keeper Abe Hannigan tried to smother, but the ball rolled loose to Morrison, who knocked a shot into the net for his first of three goals on the day.

It would not take long for the Eagles to respond, as in the 15th minute, Cochran sent a pass from the near side of the field to senior David Garofalo, who cut into the box near the end line, and launched a screaming shot past Covenant keeper Shuler Polk for his first goal of the campaign.

The Scots regained a one-goal lead in the 31st minute on Morrison's second goal of the game.  This time, the senior found himself on the end of Roy Anderson's throw in, that was deflected to the edge of the six-yard box.  Morrison would convert the resulting shot for the score.

Once again, Emory would answer Covenant's goal with one of its own shortly after.  At the 37:07 mark, Hannigan would punt a ball to the middle of the field, that freshman Sebastian Hardington flicked forward to junior Andrew Jones.  Jones would settled down the ball about 15 yards outside the goal, and launched the ball past the keeper for his fourth goal of the year.  Both Hannigan and Hardington picked up their first assists of the season on the play.

The win brought Emory's season ledger to 8-5-2, while Covenant dropped to 7-8-1 on the year with the loss.

Friday's game also marked the final home game of the regular season for the Eagles.  Emory will now embark on a season-defining three game road trip, during which the Eagles will face all three teams they are currently tied with for the lead in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Emory will begin the road trip on Friday, October 26th at 18th-ranked Brandeis University.  The game is schedule for a 6:30 PM start.
