Rheaume’s ‘Golden Goal’ Keeps Emory’s UAA Title Hopes Alive

Rheaume’s ‘Golden Goal’ Keeps Emory’s UAA Title Hopes Alive

Emory University sophomore Michael Rheaume broke a scoreless tie 24 seconds in the second overtime with his second goal of the season on Sunday afternoon, giving the Eagles a 1-0 win over New York University and keeping the squad in the heat of the race for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Title.

After NYU's Kyle Green took a shot that was blocked just nine seconds into the second-overtime period, the Eagles went on the counterattack, with senior co-captain Andrew Natalino leading the way down the near side of the field.  Reaching the outskirts of the 18-yard box, Natalino crossed the ball to Rheaume, who was able to bury the shot inside the far post for the 'golden goal,' the first of his career.  It was the second assist of the season for Natalino, who now leads all Eagles with 26 points.

The win gave the Eagles a 3-2-1 record in UAA games this season, and, coupled with Carnegie Mellon's 2-1 win over Brandeis on Sunday, a chance at the conference title with one game remaining in the schedule.  With an Emory win against the Tartans next Saturday, couple with a Washington University (Mo.) loss or tie, the Eagles will claim at least a share of the UAA Championship.  Emory can be assured an NCAA Tournament berth as well with a win, a Wash U. loss to Chicago, and a Brandeis loss or tie to NYU.

While Rheaume was the immediate hero for the Eagles, Emory would not have reached the second overtime if not for the play of freshman goalkeeper Abe Hannigan, who recorded the second shutout of his career in the win with a three-save effort.  In the first overtime, Hannigan made a diving stop on a ground shot by NYU's Nico Bergstroem, which would have ended the contest if not for the effort of the freshman.

The Eagles finished the game with a 15-10 edge in shots, and a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Natalino led all players in the game with seven shots and three shots on goal.

Emory raised its overall season ledger to 9-6-2 with the win, while NYU fell to 10-6-1 overall, and to 2-3-1 in UAA action.  The Eagles will take on Carnegie Mellon with the season on the line on Saturday, November 3rd at 5:30 PM in Pittsburgh, PA.
