Emory Men’s Soccer Draws with Centre in Season Opener

Emory Men’s Soccer Draws with Centre in Season Opener

Despite playing with just 10 men for the majority of two overtime periods, the Emory University Men's Soccer Team was able to hold on for a 1-1 draw with Centre College in its opening game of the 2014, at the Sonny Carter Invitational at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Friday.

With the tie, both teams remain atop the standings of the tournament with a point apiece, with a game between Covenant College and Rutgers University – Newark taking place later in the day.

Both teams had limited opportunities in the first half, with the Eagles taking five shots (including three on goal), while the Colonels registered three shots, one of which was on target.  The best chance for either team in the first half came in the 40th minute, when Centre's Jacob Winkler sent a well-place shot past Emory keeper Abe Hannigan and towards the far post that was cleared off the line by an Emory defender.

The Eagles would break through in the 51st minute of action, when junior Derek Chan intercepted a clearing attempt from the Colonels' defense, and sent a cross into the box that was headed in by Dylan Price.  It was the 30th career goal for Price, the reigning Most Valuable Player of the Sonny Carter Invitational, moving him into sole possession of 14th-place in school history in the category.

The score remained 1-0 until the waning minutes of regulation, when Centre took advantage of a late corner kick to equalize the contest.  Eric Muth took the corner for the Colonels in the 84th minute, sending it toward the far post, where Connor Reed was waiting to head it past Hannigan and into the back of the net for the score.

Emory had a late opportunity to clinch the match in the final seconds of regulation, when Price intercepted a pass and took a shot that sailed just wide of the net, sending the contest into overtime.

Early in the first overtime period, a Centre player went on a long breakaway up the field, but was taken down by Emory senior Noah Rosen, resulting in a red card for the Eagles' defender and co-captain, and forcing Emory to play a man down the rest of the way.

In the second overtime, Winkler had another opportunity for Centre taking a point-blank shot that was saved by Hannigan in the 107th minute, his fourth and final stop of the contest.  Centre finished with a 17-16 advantage in shots, with each team taking six shots on goal.  Price led all players with six shots during the game, including a pair on target.

Ohan Missirian-Dill played the entire game in goal for Centre, making five saves.

The Eagles will wrap up play at the Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday, August 30th at 4:30 PM against Rutgers University – Newark.  Centre will finish up tournament play on Saturday at 2:00 PM against Covenant.
