#9 Eagles Fall 1-0 on Road to NYU

The ninth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer Team suffered its second-straight conference loss, falling 1-0 to University Athletic Association (UAA) rival New York University on Friday afternoon in New York.

Emory dropped to 11-2-1 on the year with the loss, while NYU improved to 11-2-0 overall.  The Eagles (1-2-0 UAA) also fell three points behind the Violets (2-1-0 UAA) for first place in the conference, with the other six teams all in action later on Friday.

Emory went on the attack early, taking the first four shots of the game, including a pair on target, and holding NYU without a shot for the first 11 minutes of action.  The Eagles would go on to outshoot the Violets 8-3 over the first 45 minutes of action, including a 4-0 edge in shots on goal, but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard during the first half.

NYU broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute, when an Emory shot was cleared out of the defensive zone by the Violets, with Deniz Oncu sending a long ball forward to spring Malcolm Montilus on a breakaway.  Montilus was able to finish the one-on-one opportunity with Emory keeper Abe Hannigan for his sixth goal of the season.

Emory made a late push to tie the game, taking four corner kicks in the final two minutes of action, but the NYU defense held tight to secure the shutout win.  The Eagles outshot the Violets 22-8 in the game, and took 10 shots on goal while holding NYU to one – the eventual game-winning goal.

Emory sophomore Scott Haley led all players with five shots in the game, while freshman Gabriel Vasconcelos came off the bench to add on four shots, including a pair on goal.

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards Brandeis University, ranked seventh in Division III.  The Eagles will travel to Waltham, Massachusetts to face the Judges at 11:00 AM on Sunday, October 19th.
